Naomh Fionnbarra suffered a 16-point defeat to St. Kevins at Philipstown on Saturday evening in the Division 2 League. Played in sunny, dry conditions, excellent for football, the Kevins stormed out of the traps and scored a goal with their first attack by midfielder Evan Maher straight from the throw in. They tacked on 3 more points before they were awarded a penalty after a mix up with a Finbarrs short kick out. Cian Callan dispatched the kick easily past Nicholas Butterly to put the Kevins in a commanding position. All the Togher men could muster in reply was a Thomas McCreesh free. At the first water break the Philipstown men were 9 points to the good.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Kevins scored another 1-2 while Thomas McCreesh scored a couple more frees. The first half from the Togher men was very poor although there was a slight improvement in the 2nd quarter. Half time score: Naomh Fionnbarra 0-3(3) St. Kevins 3-6(15).
The half time break gave some respite and the Finbarrs improved slightly again. A fine long range score by Michale McArdle and a couple more points from McCreesh (1 free) doubled their tally but the Philipstown men kept the scoreboard ticking over with 5 more points to lead by 14 at the second water break.
A goal by Thomas McCreesh from a quick free and a second goal by Michael McArdle from play sandwiched a McCreesh point from play in the 4th quarter. However, at the other end the Kevins continued to pile on the misery for the Togher men scoring another 1-6. Final score: Naomh Fionnbarra 2-7(13) St. Kevins 4-17(29).
