Louth MFC glory for Cooley Kickhams/Cuchulainn Gaels

COOLEY KICKHAMS/CUCHULAINN GAELS 4-10
ST KEVINS ST MICHAELS 2-9

Cooley Kickhams/Cuchulainn Gaels claimed the Louth Minor Championship title after seeing off the challenge of St Michaels/St Kevins at Darver on Sunday afternoon.

The peninsula side went into the game looking to bring the Fr Larry Murray Cup back to Fr McEvoy Park for the first time since 2006 and they achieved their objective with an impressive seven-point win.

The Kickhams/Gaels combination were full value for their win as they took a firm grip on the game with their first five points and never really looked like losing control despite a gallant effort from the Mid Louth side.

The Cooley lads were determined to stamp their authority on this game from the outset and the made their intentions clear when they reeled off the first five points inside six minutes.

The Kevins/Michaels got off the mark in the seventh minute and showed soon found their rhythm as they added two more points before a goal from Tom Matthews levelled the game at 1-3 to 0-6 after 25 minutes.

However, the Cooley/Cuchulainn response was decisive as just before the break Calum O’Hanlon found the net to put his side 1-7 to 1-4 ahead at half time.

Cooley continued to have the edge at the start of the second half and they increased the lead to six points when Cian Murphy added a second goal on 39 minutes.

It looked as if that might be the foundation for a comfortable victory but once again the Mid Louth side hit back in style as a goal from Jamie Durnin and three unanswered points saw them get back on level terms at 2-8 apiece.

Just when the peninsula men appeared to be in trouble, they found the perfect response as a goal from Dylan Quinn on 46 minutes settled them and five minutes later the same player added a second goal to open up a six-point gap.

This time there was no way back for the Kevins/Michaels and the Cooley side held out comfortably in the closing minutes to secure victory.
