Killoe Young Emmets moved a step close to defending their Longford senior football championship crown today by defeating Abbeylara 2-11 to 0-14 to move into the competition’s semi-finals.

Daniel Mimnagh netted both goals for the holders either side of half-time at Pearse Park, where they advanced back into the last four with three points to spare.

Robbie Smyth’s scores had saw Abbeylara into a 0-7 to 0-3 lead midway through the first-half and Willie Crawford’s point had them five to the good prior to Mimnagh’s penalty on the stroke of half-time bringing Killoe right back into contention.

Another Smyth free made it 0-10 to 1-5 early in the restart but Mimnagh found Abbeylara’s net again and, from there, the victors turned the screw with Eamon Keogh, Larry Moran, Mimnagh and Ronan McGoldrick all sailing points that had them in the ascendency down the home stretch.

McGoldrick struck a brace of points in the late stages and Johnny Borland ensured the victory in the second minute of injury-time.

In the later game, Mullinalaghta also sealed a semi-final berth with an impressive 3-22 to 0-6 win over Carrickedmond.

Aiden McElliott’s early goal helped the 2018 champions towards a 1-7 to 0-1 lead at the break and further majors from former Cavan star Cian Mackey and McElliott once more eased them to victory over their outclassed opponents.
