Intermediate Championship Relegation Semi Final

Glin 1-11

Monaleen 1-10

All roads led to Askeaton for our all-important relegation semi-final on Saturday. With a relegation final looming for the loser of this tie, a performance of character, passion and attitude was needed from our young side to avoid that fate.

We started the game brightly and scored a point within 20 seconds from the left foot of county and club stalwart Padraig Scanlon, with some nice link up play in the midfield by Joe Martin and Sheagh O Connor. At the first water break we led the game 5 points to 1 point. Four from Scanlon and a nicely taken score from James  Wallace. At this stage of the game, our boys were on top and it looked like the game could be one sided. However, Monaleen got to grips with the tempo and at the end of the first half the score board read Glin 6 points - Monaleen 4 points.

The second half was a tough affair for our lads and it looked at stages if momentum was going against our boys. A brace of points from Scanlon and O Connor kept the score board ticking over. A further two points from the boot of Scanlon matched two scores from Monaleen and this game was in the melting pot. Ronan Culhane and Conor Shine were putting in towering performances in the middle of the park throughout the second half. Down two points with 10 minutes to go, super sub Stephen Barrett entered the fray. His introduction was a masterstroke and he popped up with a crucial goal that put us up 1-10 to 10 points with the game entering injury time. Askeaton pitch over recent years has been prone to a last ditch goal and on this occasion it was no different - this time for Monaleen. A breaking ball into the square, managed to make its way through a sea of bodies and nestle into the back of the Glin net.  This goal well into injury time signalled a draw game with only seconds left. Thankfully it was only seconds our boys needed as the quick kickout from club veteran Sean Lyons, worked smartly by Padraic O Connor and Conor Shine made its way to Sheagh O Connor who wormed his way through the middle of the field and slotted over a crucial point to put us into a one point lead.

Thankfully that is how it finished - Glin 1-11 to 1- 10. This win has secured our Intermediate status for another year.

Best for Glin were : Ronan Culhane, Sheagh O Connor, Padraig Scanlon, Jack Sheehan, Aidan Mulvihill and Sean Lyons.
