West Senior Football League Round 2:

St. Kieran’s 2.10 Gerald Griffins 1.11

The senior footballers opened their account on Tuesday evening last with a hard-fought victory over 2020 County Intermediate Championship finalists Gerald Griffins in Coolcappagh. We began the game the brighter of the two sides with two first half goals from Noel Callanan and Jack Harnett as well as scores Liam Kennedy and Stephen Lyons giving us a commanding first half lead. To the Shannonsiders credit they battled hard in the second half with the introduction of a number of first team regulars greatly bolstering the side. As the game edged into the final quarter Gerald Griffins began to grow in confidence and reduced the deficit which had been ten points at one stage down to two thanks to a well finished goal following a turnover of possession on our part. As the final whistle approached both sides sought the decisive score to take the all important two points. Gerald Griffins will count themselves unlucky not to have gotten more from the game having played extremely well in the fourth quarter while from our perspective the youthful side played some excellent passages of football for three-quarters of the game and did just enough in the final quarter to see off the stiff challenge of Gerald Griffins and get our first win of the 2021 season. Next up we play St. Senan’s in round three. Read next weeks edition for the match report.

West Junior A Hurling League:

Round 1 St. Kieran’s 4.22 Newcastlewest 0.8

Round 2: St. Kieran’s 0.11 Rathkeale 0.13

The junior hurlers got their 2021 campaign underway this past Friday with a comprehensive victory over Newcastlewest B in round 1 of the West League. The manner of the victory was very encouraging with a number of new players being introduced into the team including Cathal McEnery, Cormac Mann, Shay Greaney and Tom McMahon. On Sunday, the team made the journey to the Bog Garden Rathkeale to take on the home side for their second game in three days. Missing a number of first team regulars due to injury and starters from Friday nights game Sunday’s encounter was a far more challenging encounter. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite hit the same heights as Friday nights game against much superior competition, but the manner of the performance was very encouraging ahead of the championship with James O’ Connor and Cathal McEnery in particular putting in very good performances.

Team vs Newcastlewest: John Greaney, Liam Kennedy, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Edward Fitzgerald, Cathal McEnery, Jack Harnett, Anthony Mullins, Mossie Shine, Eoin McEnery, Michael Murphy, Billy Breen, Cormac Mann, Shay Greaney, Johnny McCarthy, Kaelan O’ Connor, Patrick Liston, Tom McMahon, Kieran Copse, Padraig Balfe

Team vs Rathkeale: John Greaney, James O’ Connor, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Edward Fitzgerald, Cathal McEnery, Jack Harnett, Eoin Burke, Mossie Shine, Eoin McEnery, Michael Murphy, Mike Flynn, Cormac Mann, Tom McMahon, Johnny McCarthy, Patrick Liston, Billy Breen, Kieran Copse,

Limerick GAA

Best wishes to Darragh Treacy and his Limerick senior football teammates who take on Waterford this Saturday in the Gaelic Grounds at 3pm in the opening round of the Munster Senior Football Championship. Limerick come into the game fresh off a highly productive Allianz League campaign which saw them secure a place in the semi final where they came up short against eventual champions Derry. Limerick and Waterford also met in the 2020 championship in Fraher Field Dungarvan with Limerick emerging victorious 2.14 to 0.9 against the home side. Hopefully on Saturday afternoon Limerick can continue on their rich vein of form this season which has seen them secure victories over Munster Champions Tipperary and Wicklow while put in strong performances in defeat to Offaly and Derry. The prize on offer for Saturday’s winner is a Munster semi final berth against Cork on July 10 in the Gaelic Grounds
