Andy Moran has been ratified as Leitrim's new senior football manager

Former Mayo star Andy Moran has been named as Leitrim’s new senior football manager.

The 2017 Footballer of the Year was ratified by Leitrim county board at its management meeting last night.

Ex-Mayo U20 boss Mike Solan has been named as Assistant Manager to Moran while former Leitrim players Barry McWeeney and James Glancy are his selectors.

It sees Moran steeping into his first role as a senior inter-county manager, having previously coached Mayo U20s. He is also currently serving as player-manager of Ballaghaderreen.

The 37-year-old succeeds Cavan native Terry Hyland in the post, with the latter having steered Leitrim to Division 3 promotion during his first year in charge in 2019.

The Connacht men were relegated back to Division 4 in 2020 and Hyland’s last game in charge would end in a 5-20 to 0-11 defeat at the hands of Mayo in the Connacht SFC this past July.

During an inter-county career which spanned 16 years, Moran won eight Connacht titles, two National Leagues and lined-out in six All-Ireland finals.

"Leitrim GAA, at its Management Meeting last night ratified the appointment of Andy Moran as its Senior Team Manager for 2022," an official statement read.

"We are delighted to bring the process of selecting a person to lead the County’s Senior Team into competitive action for the 2022 season to a conclusion with the appointment of the former Mayo Senior Footballer to this position.

"We look forward to a year of progress, as we, hopefully, head into a playing season in which normality will have resumed, following the continued Covid pandemic disruption of the 2020/2021 playing seasons."
