Kildare will play either Kerry or Tyrone in next Saturday’s All-Ireland U20 football championship final after overcoming Sligo by 0-12 to 0-7 at Kingspan Breffni this evening.
Alan Browne led the way with 0-5 for the Lilywhites in a low-scoring last four contest that saw them dominating defensively over the hour.
In fact, it took Sligo 17 minutes to get off the mark in Cavan Town as Oisin Flynn bombed over from long range prior to Lee Duignan backing up his team mate’s opener with a ‘45’.
The scores board read 0-5 to 0-3 before Kildare closed out the half strong via points from Browne (2) and Niall O’Regan to leave five in it at the half.
Gavin Duffy cut the deficit to four for the Connacht champions with the first score of the second-half but O’Regan immediately cancelled it out.
Sligo would come into their best spell afterwards and it saw Joseph Keaney, Canice Mulligan and Eoghan Smith all raising white flags to make it a two-point game.
However, a stingy Kildare defence made sure their opponents didn’t register another score and, down at the other end, Tommy Gill, Browne and Dean O’Donoghue all sailed over and cemented the Leinster champions’ final berth.
Kerry and Tyrone face off tomorrow afternoon in Portlaoise (1pm) for a place alongside Kildare in the final.
