"The process they've gone about, it's disrespectful to him"

Former Dublin midfielder Ciaran Whelan has criticised the Kerry county board over the appointment process for their next senior football manager.

The Kingdom announced earlier this week that a sub-committee, headed by Kerry GAA chairperson Tim Murphy, has been put in place to recommend its preferred candidate.

It means outgoing boss Peter Keane will have to reapply for the position after his three-year term came to an end with last month's All-Ireland semi-final defeat to eventual champions Tyrone.

Speaking on the RTÉ GAA Podcast, Whelan believes the situation could have been handled better and that it has been "disrespectful" to Keane.

"There's probably a lot of noise going on in the background but it's amazing how the county board didn't at least sit down with Peter Keane and say 'right, let's have a review of the three years, where are you at? What are your plans? What are you looking at?'" said 'Whelo'.

"The process they've gone about, it's disrespectful to him. He deserves a bit more [respect], I know it's three years and they haven't won [All-Ireland SFC title] but it's simple basic respect, you go about the process in an appropriate manner.

"If they don't want him as manager, then at least deal with it in the right way, putting a general advertisement out there that you can reapply for the job, I don't get that."
