€250k over 5 years covering all teams. In some ways it seems low. But €50k per year is probably good as they have a reasonable low profile compared to men's teams. Hope this is only the start. Kit sponsor, official partner with business, brand ambassadors etc Some individuals do very well out of promotional activities and I'm genuinely delighted for them. However it just shows how poor the County Board is at the same thing! Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1824 - 20/01/2022 18:42:44 2395793 Link 0 |

Isn't James Foley banned for 6 months? He was reasonably good at a few matches I saw last year... Could be good enough to sub not sure about starting. Anyway if he's banned then he's out.

Thought Liam Silke was more than decent kept Conor Cox quiet after he was man marking him... Just the other backs, Fitzgerald, Johnny Heaney, and Sean Kelly had fantastic games.

Tommy Varden sponsored for years when money was tight & nobody else would & Galway not going well. Pat & Una Mc Donagh did the same for decades, across all teams, when nobody else would put their hand in their pocket. Eaten bread is quickly forgotten in Galway GAA.

Football fans can expect to hear the term "stand alone arrangement" a lot more going forward.

Companies afraid to put hard earned cash into a brand that has had serious financial scandals & worry about what could come out next & their brand aligned to it. Camogie is a different organisation & doesn't carry that baggage or stain, so more amenable to sponsors.

There has been a lack of professionalism over the years. If things we run properly sponsorship deals would not be seen as Galway putting out the begging bowl. We are a big high profile county. We get a lot of TV coverage. We always have teams at the latter stages of competitions. Business should see that they are getting value from being linked to us. Win Win. Even down to naming rights for Pearse Stadium. Many new companies want name recognition and that is an easy sell. Win Win. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1824 - 21/01/2022 10:16:59 2395829 Link 0 |
Galways short term aim is to get out of Div 2, Silke will look good at this level but he's been a disappointment at the very top level. For Corofin and at Sigerson level he looked like a player who was capable of winning All Stars but that form has never transmitted itself at the very top level. Maybe he's been unlucky with matchups, he struggles with anyone with real pace but has done reasonably well when sent to mark Cillian O'Connor. McDaid gets a lot of attention on here, his performances have been average but he just hasn't stayed fit since he came back. Had a brilliant 20 minutes against the Dubs in Croke Park in Feb 2019 but broke his foot that day and its been once injury after another since then. The lad was one of the best players we've had at underage the last decade and has the physical attributes too, if he can stay fit I'm sure his performances will improve. Have to disagree there, Liam Silke is a quality player, a Denis Irwin type player 7 or 8 out of 10 most matches. He won't be missed till he is not available, I believe he is about to qualify as a doctor and when that happens he may not be available for selection as more important things in life than playing for Galway and getting online abuse happen. Multiple managers can't be wrong picking him over a long period of time. His best position would be in the halfback line but we never see that as he does a job for the team. He is also never injured and is always available, he is the one player you can depend on all the time to turn up.

He was left wide open by managers tactics of not supporting full back lines.. He's a quality defender Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 21/01/2022 19:49:44 2395908 Link 3 |
Lad are you there at all? Michael Daly and Colin Murray are both out for 6 months. I wouldn't try Liam at full back, Corofin have had him at full a few times this year and it's not his best or most effective position. Sean Fitzgerald was pretty good as far as fbd goes so I'd say stick with him at least the first game.... Not like we've too many other options apart from Sean Andy systematic (Galway) - Posts: 69 - 21/01/2022 21:10:39 2395918 Link 0 |

That's true, but having good man-marking corner backs is a must for any team looking to contend. Dublin have had the likes of Fitzsimons and previously Cooper and McMahon who can be left to fight their battles 1-on-1 when necessary. This frees up other players from having to cover all of the time. All good teams will defend in numbers when possible, but there are times when a quick ball in from a turnover means an inside back has to be able to hold his own with the comfort of a sweeper. Any good forward will do some damage if 1-on-1 with a bit of space, but the good top corner backs will limit this. The job Fitzsimons did in the 2nd half of the 2019 drawn final on Clifford was as good as anyone could have done in the circumstances.
