2021 Hurling Championship

It is difficult to say that one player makes the difference but sometimes it does. Especially in a county that does not produce big numbers of top players in critical positions. I would be a lot more confident if Tadgh DeBurca was playing this year. HIs ability to cover the full back line and launch attacks is major loss. That cover is our weak spot and a big ask for young Iarlaith Daly. Austin Gleeson definitely not the answer. The only one who ever managed to cover for Tadgh was Daragh Fives and I don't know if he is in the panel anymore. A great player but injury controlled his career.

You were the best team in 2019 too but didnt win the AI. The best team doesnt always win the biggest prize. That's knockout hurling for you. One off day and you are gone, no matter how brilliant you are!"
Alright Viking point taken and well made. I would say however that when I say those boys gone last year I remember saying to myself 'forget this year' and I do think that Galway erred bigtime in not going man on man with our full back line, seeing they were inexperienced in those positions. Nash had an absolute field day as a loose man as you should have been expected with his history, where he had no history as a man marking corner back. At least he should have been tested.

Ignore him. The slightest hint of criticism of his beloved Limerick, he's back blasting with both barrels. Two All-Irelands in the last 48 years and they think they are king of the castle.

Galway were trying crowd the middle 3rd to stem the flow of your points I think.

Looking at next weekend I actually think in a roundabout way Antrim's good showing in the league will do Dublin a favour as any hint of surprise or uncertainty in relation to Antrim is gone, think Dublin will win by 5 or 6. I certainly wouldn't be taking Laois for granted as a Wexford follower, Laois beating Dublin in 19 and running Clare to a point last year can throw away any notions we have, I think we'll show Laois the due respect despite this and get set up a huge game against Kilkenny. Clare and Waterford could be a great game, I think Waterford have enough to win by 3 or 4.

Says the man who is still on about '73 and comes from one sport land. I was not speaking to you. I was making a relevant point with another very civilised contributor, who never makes personal attacks on other contributors. Play the ball and not the man.

I agree, Galway would have been much better going out and have a go, they adopted a very defensive gameplan which they didn't need to do with the players they have. Perhaps having lost the leinster final made the management think they had to do something different. I felt they were a team playing as if they were not trying to lose as opposed to go out and winning the game.

I think that was the opinion of most Galway hurling supporters too. A toe to toe battle would have played better to Galways strengths. We may still have lost it but at least we would have known we has given it everything. But I have to give credit to Shane O'Neill....he played with a sweeper last year and most Galway hurling people were fearing that he would continue with it this year but he learned the lessons from that Limerick game and has applied the lessons he learned in our matches since then.

Clare and Waterford is a tough one to call. Think Lohan is building somewhat of a siege mentality in the camp. After the All Ireland last year was thinking Waterford could do what Limerick did in 18, they may still.
It's great to have Championship back at the weekend

Replying To gatha:  "I could be wrong about Davy looking from the outside in. This year will tell a lot but I don't see him staying with Wexford after this year. He reminds me of Loughnane in that he is the star of the show. A lot of Clare believe that although Lougnane brought Clare 2 All-Irelands, and that was fanatastic, he cost them in later years with all he nonsense associated with him. When you see the way Kiely, Cody and Galvin conduct themselves they are built for the long haul if they choose I don't see that in Davy."
I totally disagree with your comments about Fitzgerald and Loughnane. OK sure thing that Cody has been legendary in what he's done with kilkenny his longivety is second to none. He's had a conveyor belt of class players coming through year in year out but he gets the best out of them. I don't think Clare under Loughnane or Fitzgerald at wexford have had the strength of squad to maintain a long term challenge it's not that easy. For instance wexford came close a couple of years ago and with not really a top class team in my opinion. Kielys doing a good job in Limerick but the huge money being pumped in is certainly helping.

I guess another way of saying it would be: Would Cody have been as successful as the Clare or Wexford Manager? We'll never know.

I think Davy is all about Davy. With that, you get the short term impact. Success is important for his profile and his career is very much about his profile.

Cody is all about Kilkenny hurling. As he says himself, he'll stay wanting to do the job as long as he feels he has something to offer. Success is great when it comes but his primary focus is all about getting the most out of what he has, constantly improving the culture and standards of Kilkenny hurling.

For me, Loughnane for me was one of the all time greats. He took a half decent team who failed badly in 2 Munster finals and turned them into one of the toughest opponents over a 5 year spell, managing to win 2 All-Ireland and 3 Munster titles. All this in a County with no real history of success. They guy wasnt perfect and lots of people will quickly point at things he didnt do well, but the good stuff was pretty impressive.

The nineties were very tough from a Limerick point of view. Seeing Offaly, Wexford and Clare win while losing 2 All Irelands hurt a lot.
I remember being envious of Clare especially with Loughnane as manager, I thought he was nuts but he brought a fierce energy and determination to Clare that was fantastic to see. I was genuinely thrilled for them when they won in 95.. Suppose that sort of manic hurt and fury from his own playing days was only going to last so long before it fizzled out...especially with the success They had.

Davy is hard to figure out.very passionate hurling man but too wired imo. Clare hurling people that I know are of the opinion that Paul Kinnerks input was more important in 2013 than Davy Fitz. In fact they reckon Limerick have become the team that Clare could have been but his obsession with the sweeper system held them back and they regressed as a result.

Top to Bottom Rankings based on form. Predictions are purely what I think will happen.

1. Galway - Harsh on Limerick but I think they are the favourites this year. Unreal squad depth and probably an easier run to the final

Prediction - Unbeaten All Year

2. Limerick - Superb last year but I have an inkling winter hurling suited them more than other counties. Impossible to knock too much but history is against them in terms of repeating and I have my doubts that their numbers 18-25 are good enough as back ups if there are injuries. Have no replacement for Gearoid Hegarty or Cian Lynch and showed they can be beaten in the league.

Prediction - Munster Winners, AI Finalists where they die on their shield

3. Waterford - Will get very close this year. I think they could be pipped in Munster by Limerick but wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they beat them. Panel looks stronger and more dynamic than last year and year two of Liam Cahill will really bring them on.

Prediction - Munster Losers, AI Semi Finalists where they give Galway the game of the year.

4. Kilkenny - We take their stubbornness and toughness for granted but it is admirable. However their panel if anything is getting weaker and I think they will have a very quiet year.

Prediction - Lose The Leinster Semi Final to Wexford and then lose a classic v Tipp in Qualifier.

5. Tipperary - Very talented but still rely heavily on the old brigade. If the Mark Kehoes, Ger Brownes Dillon Quirkes et al can become leaders they will be very good but again I have my doubts and I fear the reliance on Padraig Maher, Noel McGrath and Seamie will eventually backfire.

Prediction - Beaten by Waterford in Munster, beat KK in qualifiers before being run ragged by Wexford in AI Q Final

6. Clare - Improving in fairness however too reliable on TK and lack of natural forwards will tell eventually.

Prediction - Beaten by Waterford in Munster, beat Dublin and Cork in qualifiers before losing to Waterford again in AI Q Final.

7. Cork - Have the potential to be dangerous and obviously have some top quality however their new game plan has not convinced me and I'm not sure they know where they are going. If they can get the most out of the young speedy talent they have a chance however I think they will lose out physically, as per, in Champioship hurling and their full back line will let them down

Prediction - Beaten by Limerick in Munster, before losing to Clare in a lacklustre performance.

8. Wexford - Everything relies on whether winter hurling was the excuse last year or not. IF the game plan clicks they will be extremely dangerous and have some decent new talent that is underrated. Chin and Rory O Connor are crucial.

Prediction - Will expose KK lack of depth in Leinster before being outmuscled in Leinster Final v Galway. Will run Tipp ragged before pushing Limerick to the pin of their collar in AI Semi Final.

9. Dublin - Some decent players however they don't seem to be improving and I think this will be the end of the Road for Mattie Kenny.

Hurler of the Year - Cathal Mannion

Rookie of the Year - Jack Fitzpatrick Galway/Connal Flood Wexford

Munster was box office when Loughnane was in charge..

I think 2013 was the perfect storm for Clare. Maybe one of the more fortunate teams to win an All-Ireland. It took them 5 years to make it back into a semi-final. Some of the nicest and most skillful players to ever play for Clare but lacked steel and leadership.

There's a fair bit to catch up on here!
So...
1. Galway have been great for the Leinster championship. They should be in at club championships and all underage too. But the Leinster Championship has been good to them too, the extra games stand teams in good stead and I doubt any Galwegians would claim otherwise?
2. I think Davy's time in Wexford will come to an end this summer, but I know 1 thing - Mattie Kenny's will too and there is a similar project to Wexford except with slim pickings of underage success (at least Davy had 3 x U21 Leinsters in a row), unless the U20s have something magic tonight. Anybody who thinks he won't have anywhere to go is delusional.
3. I hate Davy's antics. I hate managers going mental on the line, let the crowd do that all they want but as a manager you have to keep your cool. Its not "passion", its stupid and infuriating and we had a club manager a couple of years ago who went on with the same crap. It turned referees against us.
4. Davy brought Wexford on, but we will forever rue that Tipp defeat in 2019 and I am of the opinion that the team has not recovered from it.

Predictions for the weekend:
Dublin v Antrim, Sneaky suspicion for Antrim by 2 points.
Laois v Wexford, I think Wexford will get over the line
Clare v Waterford, Waterford by 3 points.
