Replying To TheHermit:  "If you replace complete with buy I think you'll find you'll be more in tune with histories judgment ;D"
If playing with words makes you happy and softens the disappointment of your own county's failure to complete the 5 in a row then im ok with that, thank God for the panel of footballers that completed that feat for my county, its because of them I'll never know what that feels like, my sincere sympathies to you it obviously still hurts badly 38 years later!

That's right Cork took em in the final, how often do you see that happen where a team have a brilliant semifinal and stagnate in the final.

Jack O'Connor always reckoned he'd rather win a dour miserable semifinal as it would be easier for him to bring the lads back down to earth.

Its very interesting watching the matches on youtube,Derry vs down 1994 that cork vs waterford match in 2004 was just epic (it's up already). Meath vs down just up. The red and black flags on the hill that day was amazing.

A few observations from some of the matches. God help Colm Rourke if you transported immediately from 1992 to modern day football. He spent a lot of all ireland commentary in 1992 critising donegals over elaboration, it was actually very patronising in hindsight. They weren't even over elaborate and it was a good game and Donegal were very good in the second quarter. The whole mantra was turnover and kick it up the field straight away, any form of possession and controlling the ball was a complete alien concept. Vinny Murphy was phenomenal man to win a high ball by the way.

Tyrone absolutely did not invent blanket defence, they did encourage backs to get forward though and they were just better than Kerry when they played them at the time. They dominated them in 2005, mcguigan had a great game. The blanket defence is something to attribute to jim mcguinnes.

It's stating the obvious but my Stephen cluxton kicks outs changed the face of football. The difference between 2005 final kick outs and 2013 is simply unbelievable. The kicking tee is probably a subtle yet significant factor, the tee enabling so much more control of the kick out. In the speech after he mentioned about jim Gavin emphasising repetition, repititition, repititition. That is why cluxton played pretty much all matches. He got to practise all the time as did his outfield players.

Dublin have done a great job transitioning players, a young mannion,Kilkenny and mccaffrey started in 2013 and all went off. Mannion was injured but he wasn't shooting the lights out. Jack McCaffrey and kilkenny Man of the matches in the last 3 all ireland including replays. In 2013 it was the likes of Cluxton, brogan, mcmahon, flynn, connolly, mcauley, osullivan who led the team and they could afford time for the young players to mature. This ability to integrate players (admittedly very talented plsyers) and keep winning is very impressive.

Mayo miss to many frees, Murphy and McFadden were a 100% in 2012 and plenty were not easy.I didn't do the stats but mayo missed too many in 2012 and were not great in 2013 either. Colm Boyle is a great player by the way.

I was lucky enough to be there that day. Watching it back now it's interesting how the significance of Conor Hayes' interception of Eamon Cregan's handpass intended for Big Joe barely registers on TV. I still wake up in a cold sweat over that one.

Replying To gunman:  "On my way home from the 2012 All Ireland Semi Final between Donegal and Cork I was talking to a Tyrone man and he said it was the best match he had ever seen.If a Tyrone man says that about a Donegal game then that is some recommendation. Both teams were brilliant that day and it was Donegal's best performance of that period."
Watched that game last night.

Boy were Donegal good, excellent in defence and their counter attacking play was of the very highest order. Cork were a good team but in the second half Donegal made them look very ordinary.

Nice to also see a youthful Michael Murphy and Paddy Mcbearty out there alongside some Donegal legends.

Good choice. Kikenny and Limerick dominated hurling in the mid 1930's. Also, three players in the 1936 final were selected for the Hurling Team of the Millennium. Mick Mackey of Limerick. Lory Meagher and Paddy Phelan of Kilkenny

Well it can never happen but would like to see the famous "thunder and lighting" hurling final of 1939.

Also another fantasy would be to see extensive coverage of games that Christy Ring played in or Mick Mackey and not just the fussy clips that alas are only what's available.

A question for the hurling folk on here, where would Ciarán Barr from Antrim rate amongst the hurlers of that era?

I'm asking coz I watched the allireland semifinal between offaly and Antrim last night and Barr was pulling the strings big time.

Was that shown on TV last night? I think he was always held in a high regard as a player, he won an all star if I'm not mistaken? Played for Dublin later in his career too

Barr had a great season in 1989 but he never really produced the goods on a consistent basis in subsequent years. That Antrim team had some very stylish hurlers: Paul McKillen was one of the top midfielders of that era and regularly popped over a few long range points. Sambo McNaughton was a brilliant wing back. Their 1991 semi-final with Kilkenny was an epic and they were desperately unlucky to lose by 2-18 to 1-19. After that they went into a steady decline.
