Ive boxed myself and in the stadium as well, and for years KATIE has won trophy after trophy, she was the best pound for pound womens boxer in the world before the olympics even starte.There would have been no womens boxing in olympics without her full stop,and bar the odd advertisement she got hardly no recognition, when awards were being given out she was treatly terribly, before olympics i was saying she is the only irish sports person i know who is the best in the world at her chosen sport, her father knew how little recognition she recieved and was baffled, imagine 4time world champion,5 time european champion. while enjoying katies sucess, he wont be shy about letting people who jump on the band wagon know about it.

Watching katie win gave Irish People everywhere a sense of pride , because for the first time i can ever remember there was an expectation of victory before the event took place, which in itself brought unbelievable nerves and emotion. and the biggest roar i have ever heard from a crowd at the end of the 3 round.

Spot on. She's a really great champion and she has given us something we'll all remember unlike the Irish soccer team. In fairness they tried but the continuous rendition of The Fields of Athenry sound hollow when you're being hammered.

is it not better to win 4 world championships and 5 european championships then 1 olympic medal you would imagine you should get more recognition for that but hey the olympics is in britain so thats probably why all the hype around it this time.

a brief history and geography lesson:-
1. Ireland has 32 counties and the Olympic name is Team Ireland, not republic or free state etc
2. One has to opt out of the Irish set up so the can compete for GB
3. It is team GB not ( as many in rte think) GBNI this is not permitted in the olympic rules ( and is the reason why ireland didn't compete in the 1936 rules)
4. Under the Olympic it is the whole island
5. Far more people from dublin have represented GB than you might think, in fact a Kildare man Peter Charles ( who represented Ireland in 3 Olympics won a gold for GB in this Olympics
6. there are 6 million people in ireland not 4 million often quoted by rte

this shouldn't take away from what our wonderful boxers have ahieved - but our state broadcaster is giving our poor info

You are of course correct cuchulainn35. I think Jimbo's line of posting served the purpose he intended. But, perhaps it wasn't the best thread to bring it up on. Im sure we all agree Katie is a true Irish and Olympic champion. One that every woman and man on the island can be proud of. She is an examplar athlete, conducts herself in the true sense of a sportswomen, her refusal to get dragged into a slagging match re the Russian girls pop at her only heightens her class in my books. She conducts herself in this way even though she is the best in her chosen sport. The girl is utter class.

Keep this thread for Katie, she has shown the way and will hopefully inspire many to follow.

There is a time and place for GAA parochial nonsense, but on another thread please.

And the Olympics is the most covered & coveted championship of them all and the universally most recognised. Yet you still have to have a pop at the Britons and the rest of us just for supporting Katie Taylor in these games just because people are not necessarily knowledgable about her previous exploits.

Heaven forbid any of us should experience a bit of joy or be happy for her or anything. Man alive, you'd suck the fun out of anything the way you bull on finding fault & prejudice with everything. Sad case.

im saying our media is to blame for not giving somebody who has won 4 world titles and 5 european titles the recognition they deserve so stop making things up would you.winning all them titles shows you are consitently the best performer in your grade where as the olympics comes around once every 4 years i think 4 world titles and 5 european titles is far greater achievement then 1 olympic medal.

I passed through Oldcourt today. Something tells me there's going to be one heck of a party when Katie get's home. I think I might drop by again. By the way is there a county per head per population that has as proud an international sporting representation as Wicklow ? Three olympian's by my count this year alone.
