Smart Sliothar

(Oldest Posts First)

What color is this one? Will it go over the bar by itself? Will it make Hawkeye redundant? Can you sit at your desk, click on this smart ball, and win the game without ever leaving the house?

Why is it deemed 'smart'? Were the previous sliothars 'stupid'?

This SMART for me would stand for:

Some Mindless Assessor Ruining Things!

And 'assessor' could be replaced with an even more appropriate 'a' word. But I could be getting myself into a hole if I used that particular word.

It seems to have an unnecessary chip in it.

I'm all for it though - anything to stop the plague of unregulated sliotars being smuggled into the country by ruthless criminal gangs.

It can tell u the distance from goal as u puck it.
It also tells u how hard to hit it to get a score.
With a number of variable speeds such as telling u hit it
A fair wallop.
Take lumps out of it.
Or pull hard.
For the younger players it does multiplication mathematics studies, foreign languages and science as you practice with it.
It's a huge step forward.

The 'microchip' is just a traceability tag to give them ability to scan a ball pre game to ensure they are using one from an approved (likely monopoly) supplier. It won't provide any analytics to help further dissect a game or link with hawkeye to improve decision quality on scores. Smart for the suppliers trying to combat counterfeiting I guess and allows top brass to pretend to give a crap about the poorer reaches of the world (where most of the flags and boots are made).

Same colour as the existing one.
No. It'll have to be hit over the bar by the players.
No. It won't be used to confirm scores. Hawkeye will remain for this purpose.
No. You'll have to play the match if you want to win.
It has a chip inside it to determine that it's an approved standardised sliotar.
Previous sliotars weren't stupid, but they came in all shapes and sizes. The aim of the new one is to ensure all used in games are the same.

Its more where they source these unapproved products from. Like buying cheap clothes, sweatshops and child labour come to mind. With their approved suppliers they can insist of seeing the chain of production.

" It seems that the most backward place of all when it comes to progressing the sports of hurling and football is ironically Ireland."

Is this the same sports you are talking about in this statement.

If it is a true chip then they probably will be able to experiment with different functions. A tracer is not so much. So it makes sense to get it out their in numbers to do comparisons. I was involved with QR barcodes and the amount of information can be stored in them is incredible. The chip is different but don't underestimate the potential there in the future.

Jesus, this thread would remind you of the smug looking old fella in a bar, delighting in telling you that your smartphone "isn't so smart", because it can't turn turf, or plough a field or something....
