Playing Hurling In A Different County.

(Oldest Posts First)

I read recently that Naas from Kildare are hurling in Kilkenny at underage level. And apparently are doing ok, reaching finals and beating some top quality Kilkenny juvenile clubs. See the link below.

- Are other clubs in other weaker counties also doing this ? to me it would make sense. There are lots of weaker counties who have one or two strong clubs who would benefit from competing in stronger counties.
- Might it be worth looking at having a national plan / competition for our juvenile hurling clubs. So that in time we could improve the quality of hurling throughout the country. Logistically we can now easily have an U16 team from Dublin playing an U16 team from Westmeath on a weekday in a league competition. It would benefit both clubs and definitely help the weaker county club, in this case Dublin.
- We need to spread the love of hurling across more counties. I think that we need to look at cross-pollinating the gra for hurling and playing club teams from different counties would encourage this.

Roscommon clubs have been playing in Galway under age leagues for the last 5 or 6 years. Great way to keep them interested, introduce variety in the teams they play and improve standards.

Only downside is ' workload ' as most are generally playing football, the Roscommon under age hurling league and championships are still run so there's a lot of games for the kids and parents.

Great idea but takes enormous commitment from the parents and teams involved.
I would have no problem with Wicklow or Carlow clubs playing in Wexford to be honest. But then, if you are from Fethard and you have an away match in Bray, that is when the novelty dies.

Clubs from Carlow at senior level played in Kilkenny. Down Clubs also play/played in Antrim.

Football clubs in West Clare and Limerick could benefit from playing league games in North Kerry. Similarly Wicklow clubs playing in a

I understand that in some cases a club game might involve spending an hour in a car getting to the game and an hour coming home. However, that already happens in some of the larger counties. Imagine going from East Galway to Connemara for a game. And I'm sure the same can be said for some club games in Cork, Tipperary etc. But, if it helps promote and improve hurling at the grass roots surely that's what we should be doing.

I'm curious, has it helped the standard of hurling in Roscommon, Laois, Antrim/Down, Kildare, Wicklow, wherever where it already happens ?

The current set of weaker counties in Hurling are the same set of weaker counties that were there thirty years ago. If we want to increase the number of tier 1 hurling counties that are present in twenty years time then we need to think outside of the box and do something like this. Fostering and nurturing hurling in the strong "Traditional" counties like Cork, Kilkenny, Wexford, Clare, Waterford, Tipperary, Galway is easy. We need to be aspiring for it to be realistic that Laois, Roscommon, Wicklow or Mayo could be in the All Ireland hurling final in 2041. Why not, if we don't do something like this to spread the love of hurling it will either die or stagnate.

Splitting would more sense. Bray should play in Dublin.

The issue for clubs in Kerry, Roscommon, Mayo etc who only have a handful of clubs, is the clubs play each other too much and can't develop.

Playing in a bordering county league etc will give them something different and in theory bring them on.

Mount Leinster Rangers are an excellent example of it. They had been, and might still be, playing the Kilkenny leagues built on Intermediate success and went on to make a senior club final. Would that happen had they not gone outside of Carlow to play? Who knows but it's unlikely.

Naas have been playing there for some years now, its paying dividends for their senior team.
