Very sad news of the passing of James McCartan Senior. Truly a Down legend. Double All Ireland winner in 1960 and 1961. National Football League winning manager in 1983. Condolences to the McCartan family on their sad loss, they have given so much to Down football down the years.

Very sad to read this, condolences to his family and friends,
Some contribution by two generations of the McCartan family to Down GAA,
Think his brother Dan was one of just four to play throughout the 1960s and win 3 All Ireland medals,
Often wondered if James was out injured in '68 as he was was still scoring well in '67 and would have been some years younger than Joe Lennon and Paddy Doherty who both featured in the 1968 victory.

Artisan. I may be wrong. but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the O'Neills and the McCartans were first cousins. Could you confirm that
