Joe Canning Retiring

Replying To PoolSturgeon:  "It won't surprise you but I think Katser got the wrong county there. The league game in 2019 when Joe got injured was vs Waterford. The Brick Walsh hit him with a heavy shoulder but there was no maliciousness in it. Its one of those "what might have been" scenarios, but imo in that particular year he was shaping up to have his best performances ever in a Galway jersey. He was excellent in all the league games to that point and was fitter than I'd ever seen him. He didn't return from injury until the last quarter vs Dublin in Parnell Park later that summer when he was introduced to try to rescue the game from the fire. We lost it of course and were knocked out of the championship. He was getting to that stage of his career where I felt it was foolhardy for him to be playing in the league due to the risk of injury and should have rested until the championship and so it proved. Can only speculate what type of year Galway would have had in 2019 had he rested in that years league and only played in the championship especially since Limerick got knocked out by a Kilkenny team that maximized their potential but was only of average quality in comparison to previous years."
Don't believe wrappin players in cotton wool works in our games, maybe 4 a QB in american football it works, but in GAA Soccer Rugby, players need to be involved, giving and taking the hits, injury risk, yes, but players can't just "turn up" for the big games.

Replying To Canuck:  "Great story. It irked me with big Dan getting abuse and insults hurled at him when doing runner for Derek McGrath. He would stop his truck and go into a school play ground and join the kids. When playing I never seen him pull a dirty stroke on anyone despite his size. His likes, Joe and Michael should be revered just not with what they did for themselves but others also."
Dan the man Shanahan? That's also a great story, what a treat for those aspiring young hurlers. A thrilling man on the edge of the square back in the day, a real edge of the seat type of player. Even up here in the Hurling backwaters we loved watching Shanahan.

Yes indeed, I remember it now. It was in Kilkenny in the League Semi Final. It was in the last play of the game. Limerick and Dublin played there the same day.,

He had no need to be. It was far from being any way dirty. Any hurler would have been proud of that hit but it was hugely unfortunate that a bad injury resulted from it.

After this 2021 year of all years for the Galway senior panel, it's surely more than a tad ironic to see someone attempting to validate a projection of championship form, in a particular year, for a particular individual, based on being 'excellent in all the league games'.

Yeah I get your point. Joe may have been inconsistent. No way would he be able to carry excellent league form into championship (smile). All history now anyway, not worth talking about.

There's unlikely to have been a hurler in history surely, who wouldn't have found it easier to be 'excellent in all the league games' than excellent in all the championship games. Lower intensity, lower motivation in the bulk of players, lower heat in the kitchen all around. I didn't make a point that Joe may have been inconsistent. You did above (smile).

Just wondering: is Joe Canning the type of person who would come back out of retirement after a year away? I say NO but I've been wrong a lot on here so any predictions?

Well if you were to read any of the quotes from him over the last few days he didn't seem to enjoy the life of a talented and successful sports person.

I guess he just wants his privacy. Can't fault him for that. I hope he gets what he wants in life.

Its always a bit of a downer when the top players who have given us great enjoyment and great service to their counties call it a day. Joe for sure filled these categories. His body is probably talking to him now and it and him deserves a rest. It felt the same in Waterford when Tony Browne retired and more recently Brick. New heroes emerge in the sport that keeps giving but for us who were privileged to witness these gifted giants of the game, the memories will last.

Yeah I know. I felt that way when Galway Footballers Padraig Joyce and Martin Meehan called it a day. And of course I feel it now. It'll be interesting to see how the team moves on from him.
