Replying To AfricanGael:  "Would you rather play for Stoke city and earn up to 50 grand a week or play the likes of Carlow, making all the huge sacrifices and knowing deep down that the likelihood of winning anything meaningful are virtually zero.

If you are a good young player for the likes of Stoke City, the door is open for you to end up being bought by one of the big clubs and going on to win major honours.

In soccer good players have always the chance of winning something, that's not the case in the GAA and in my opinion that's simply wrong."
100% spot on from Africangael, what's rare is wonderful.
Time for the gaa to look into accommodating inter County transfers.
Talent should always be given the chance to rise to the top.

Replying To AfricanGael:  "Well you can be certain they will lose, so is there any point in even spending any time in a competition and then reverting back to where you should have been from day one ?"
Yes. Not a fan of teams falling into a lower tier. Just have it separate from the start and let them work up.

what would happen then is teams like Dublin would poach and entice the pick of weaker rurral counties, Lads and lassies who might not be able to add one and one together would be "looked after" with push positions in Dublin...yeah, i hear the argument comming they are entitled to do that...they are in their ******, that day is almost gone and needs to be eradicated fully especially in GAA...I was at a GAA coaching convention given by a former intercounty footballer, his presentations skills were, I 'll be generous, they were "ok"...we got signed certs after 3 nights to say we had completed the course and the poor chaps signature was like something a 4 year old would attempt...lovely fellah and all that, but was hired by Leinster council from what I seen based on who he was, even at that, he wasnt trained or prepared to deliver the course effectively...but I am sure there are others out there who would be way more sutied to be doing what he was doing..nothing personal against the chap, but he was/is not suited to doing what he was hired for..

Intercounty transfers will trasnsfer the above in to companies, and if not suited to such jobs, will be hired in some capacity by companies associated with the GAA...anyone that thinks this wouldnt be the case probaby knows of its existence....of course it happens...

And good luck to those lads and lassies, if they're good enough to win an all Ireland, they should be given the chance to do so,

yes, but if they are being pulled into jobs on account of their GAA skills, that ship should have long sailed...

It applied in Offaly down the years, good players in both codes got jobs on their sporting achievements.
Not me I hasten to add, good didn't apply.

Of course it happens. I know that a former Kerry hurler was being tempted a few years back to go to a neighbouring county but it never happened. Its hard to blame players though if they can get more success in another county.

I will totally say the same…. Never a fan of the back door…. If we get hammered by Tyrone there is no point in wasting time and money on more fixtures..for what end….? The back door only suits the top teams if by some fluke they get caught out in an early round… If there was a back door last season do you think Tipperary and Cavan would have got further in the Championship than Donegal and Kerry… I seriously doubt it..!!

Any fair system should give the best teams the best chance of winning a competition - not simply being hijacked on one off day.

Of course it's fair! Adds more intensity and competition. Last year for example, Kerry were tossed out in Munster semifinal, with no opportunity to regroup. I never liked this back door, it generates money for GAA, but robs competition of drama! Hopefully, Dubs might get bounced out early, with no opportunity to regroup .

Confusing hijack drama with fairness - and I am a Corkman.

Surely that's the whole point of a championship?

I would see no reason whatsoever for Dublin or Kerry or Mayo to be given a second chance if they lose out in province at an early stage.

Indeed, there is an argument that hurling should adopt same knockout system. Would Offaly have won their first had there been a back door in the early 80s? Experience has proven that other than the occasional and brilliant runs of Fermanagh, Sligo and Wexford, that the back door overwhelmingly favours the big hitters.

And in fairness, I didn't hear too many Kerry people whinging over their exit last year.

Most who know my posts know I do advocate for return to old knockout championship from time to time but I watched Sligo, Waterford, Carlow, Clare and Wicklow among others knocked out and gone last week and more gone this weekend...does the football championship have to be played off so quickly???..I think its very harsh considering hurling has a second chance...it should be the same for both games whatever is in place.."
Different sports so different rules and structures. The more we get away from trying to run them as one game the better.

Each code should pick the structure that works best and what football does should have nothing to do with hurling so there is no fair or not fair.

If you think football should have a backdoor fine but it's nothing to do with hurling

I think when normality returns we should keep knockout championship, I'd like to see an expanded league with more games though, move to a 3 division league 10/10/12
