Run Up To Championship

(Oldest Posts First)

I think Mayo run the risk of coming into this years Championship under cooked.
While Galway and Ross may take a few beatings in the league they are still getting hard competitive games against top tier teams which will stand to them
We have Down, Westmeath, meath , leitrim and Sligo before a Connaught final not ideal prep.(no disrespect intended, but at the moemnt they are not at the same level of development)
Our recent challenge game V Donegal was an unmerciful hammering

I don't buy into all that under/over cooked nonsense, let Mayo concentrate on beating Westmeath at the weekend and don't look beyond that and never underestimate any team, that's the day you'll falter. Just as a matter of interest, when was the last challenge game between Mayo and Donegal ? You have also missed a game in your run up to the Championship.

Has a team who played in division 2 ever gone on to win Sam that same year?

Mayo will still be the team to beat in Connacht. And one of only 3 other teams that have a chance of toppling Dublin. Kerry and Donegal are also in that category. Mayo will walk Connacht and be nice and refreshed for the Semi's.

It hasn't happened much over the last few decades but (and I stand to be corrected) I think Armagh were promoted out of Div 2 in 2002 and won the AI that year overcoming Kerry in the final. I can't say how often it happened before that, but generally league status wasn't the thing it is now and even Div 3 sides made All Ireland finals (Mayo did 1996 having wintered in the 3rd tier).

Maybe Mayo just aren't good enough.

Mayo should win Connacht but have no chance of beating Dublin in the semi. There are 2 or 3 teams who possibly have that potential but Mayo simply don't have that quality and quantity of player at this moment in time.

Donegal beat us by 4 or 5 points in the challenge game. Hardly a hammering. We were in an all Ireland final against Dublin 5 months ago. None of the other challengers have that kind of recent exposure to a full strength Dublin.

We'll win Connacht if we're good enough to, I don't buy this undercooked stuff.

They're in illustrious company, Kerry, Tyrone, Donegal who have all failed to knock Dublin off their perch. Who knows, maybe this will be Kildare's year to show everyone how it's done, assuming they scrape by the the mighty Offaly or Louth in the Leinster Quarter final, and get on a roll.

Yes 2002 was the last time that a Division 2 team won Sam. Ironically there were two teams from Division two in the final that year.

It was not an unusual occurrence historically as many teams did not treat the league with the intensity some do now. That year where Armagh won in 2002, Kerry were also division 2 and they played each other and London were in the same division that year.

You must know more about the current batch of Mayo players than I do and I'm including your assumption that Mayo will win Connacht in that assessment. As for the Kingdom's prospects, unless those Kerry defenders can defend man for man they'll need to rely on their forwards to defensively take the pressure off, and only when forced into that will we find out what they're all made of. I wouldn't confuse Galway's generosity on a very off day with a true assessment of Kerry's chances any more than Kerry's flaky performance against Cork in Munster last year. I think apart from Dublin we're all a bit in unknown territory.

I wouldn't be going around saying Mayo for Connacht..far from it. We are living a charmed life in division 2 where mistakes are not punished to the same extinct as division 1. There is every chance we are caught cold v Roscommon or Galway.

Mayo are still rebuilding so I agree we don't have the power or quality to beat Dublin yet. But the aim is to get there.

Kerry would want to be careful too. A lot of hype building after the Galway game but Galway didn't lay a glove on ye and let Clifford and co run riot. Just like I said Galway aren't that bad but Kerry aren't that good either. All to play for yet but Dublin still the red hot favs.

Why are you not more confident that Mayo will win Connacht, I don't get that at all. Are you saying that Mayo aren't better than Sligo, Leitrim and Galway or Roscommon ? Show me the evidence that any of the teams I have mentioned are better than Mayo, a team that were in the All-Ireland last December.

I never understand why posters always talk down their teams, as if the whole team is reading their post and they don't want to put pressure on them.

Have confidence man.

Highly unlikely but I'm sure Kildare fans will live in hope.
