Football clearly needs a no backpass rule. Some of these matches are turning into a farce. centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 19/12/2020 21:57:09 2324186 Link 2 |
This is the rule in Basketball: centerfield (Mayo) - Posts: 360 - 20/12/2020 10:14:57 2324400 Link 0 |
Back court rule. The problem is that it would just encourage the duvet tactics even more and the blanket defence is the real problem here. It works in basketball as teams play zonal defences and there is a shot clock. I think the only solution may be a rule whereby the defending team has to retain x players in the opposition half. Would be difficult to implement though.

I have thought like you for years, a perfect rule for Gaeluc football. You will see more keep ball today in Womens final especially with count down clock

But they also have a shot clock. Arguably if there was no shot clock they would keep ball in their own half for longer. Not proposing a shot clock either, far from it. But let's start by getting rid of the mark in Gaelic football. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7290 - 20/12/2020 10:46:02 2324426 Link 2 |
Maybe the kickout but it's an area that has improved over the last few years and don't want to out too many rules in place. If a team wants to force a team long then push up. Mayo were good at this last night. The back pass I'm not convinced on. Teams can push up more to stop this from happening. Mayo ceded far too much with a spare man at the start of the second half. They should have pushed up on dublin. On a more general level the challenge with pushing up us that the keeper acts as the spare man so that's were a banning a pass to the keeper might make sense (apart from a free). Teams won't be as confident playing the ball round at the back and the team without the ball will have more incentive to hunt the ball down. Also have to be careful not to base rules in dublins dominance. Take dublin out of the equation and munster and ulster had a great year. Leinster would have been wide open and would all be good with football? Ulsterchamps_32 (Donegal) - Posts: 677 - 20/12/2020 11:33:09 2324463 Link 0 |
You can't play in your own half because you have to kickout past the 45 and then you can't go back inside your 45

It is a no brainer. It should be introduced immediately. In fact I would make it stricter and not allow a handpass to go backwards or laterally, it must go forward. There's zero skill in handing the ball to a fella behind you... with an exemption for if you are on the ground surrounded by players, then the handpass can go back. republicofcloone (Leitrim) - Posts: 375 - 20/12/2020 13:14:11 2324525 Link 0 |
Congrats to Dublin for their achievement playing within the rules that exist and it is not about them. It is about the game. People will soon again be paying money to go to watch this crap again and deserve better. Reminds me of keep ball we played as kids. What did you do ? You ran around making sure the seeker did not get close to you and if he/she did you threw it to your team mate because there was no one close to them.
