I started following the games closely in the lates 70s/early 80s. Here are some players who made a big impression on me at the time: Galway Hurlers: John Connolly, Noel Lane and PJ Molloy. Galway Footballers: Val Daly, Gay McManus, Barry Brennan. Other counties: Football - Matt Connor, Jack O'Shea, Mikey Sheehy. Hurling: Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Joe McKenna, Frank Cummins. Hurling Kilkenny: Ollie Walsh, Eddie Keher and Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien. Other counties: Christy Ring, Mick Mackey and Jimmy Doyle. The first two were before my time, but as a young lad you would often hear their names mentioned with awe by the old-timers when talking about hurling. After the Siege, some were forced west of the Shannon to places like Galway with Cromwell's infamous decree, "to hell or to Connaught". Sure there wasn't an ash tree, lest lone a hurler in the place before that. So, girleen, the roots of Galway hurling can be traced to Limerick. But you know that already, and that's why we all know that you'll shouting vociferously for the boys in green today. I myself, will be supporting the blaas. Hurling(not that I even know any Tyrone lads, sorry): Dj Carey ( for me the greatest to grace the game), Shefflin and Galway's Joe canning. He finally got what he deserved back in 2018. Football: Maurice Fitzgerald, Ciaran mc Donald ( greatest baller in my opinion although maurice is close because both footed), and probably ....3rd place is hard Brogan, mc carthy and cluxton are about on par with each other but to be honest it has to be Connoly, gooch is a near one too but Connoly is just a hard man, when he played well Dublin did too. Obviously not much was thought of LK when one couldn't wait to fly or run away when the going got tough. But now it's like a desperate cry for attention to feel connected to where one came from.
