The Black Card Or Lack Of It..

(Oldest Posts First)

The one downer from the weekend football was the evidence of persistent fouling around the middle of the field to the 45 yard line to breakdown an attack and allow a whole defensive unit (usually 10 or more players) to reset. Cork were at it, Kerry were at it and so too were Mayo. There was even 1 or two cases from my own team against Antrim.

This is planned, premeditated and professional fouling. I'd almost swear that players keep a count of ticks so they don't get a yellow. Very little evidence of an appropriate punishment.. The whole purpose of the black card was to eliminate this element from our game. It ain't doing its job..

It probably makes more sense than ever now to foul in that area. The advanced mark can only be called from a ball kicked in during open play. So a free kick in that area means no handy marks or else they can go lateral/backwards and give you time to get your defensive shape.

It was appalling the amount of cynical fouls in the Kerry and Cork game, the players weren't even trying to disguise it. I know the conditions were poor but it was foul after foul. The ref was very poor, a couple of black cards early on would have made a difference.

That was exactly the reason it was brought in and blocking runners in the middle third. It is so obvious that it is a tactic being used by teams and referees should be well aware of it. It is ruining the game.

The first Kerry black card could have got 2 in the same play! He took one man out continued on to another.... in theory a red!

I think a lot of players are getting really good at cynical fouls without actually dragging players down thereby avoiding the black card. My view is black and yellow should be amalgamated and 10 minutes in the bin should apply to all.

In rugby persistent fouling by a team can is a sin bin.......u could be the unlucky player making ur first tackle of the day and get the line because of what went before. Where as in GAA persistent fouling applies to the individual rather than the team.

Consistency in its application is worrying. A lad could get a black card for trip and then an opposition player does the same and gets a yellow.

Sledging is a black card offence and the ref bottled it sun eve. He changed a free decision due to two Cork players sledging but had nt the balls to issue black. I suppose he d have to have given 2 Cork players black at same time so he just ignored it. The black card is also deliberate trip pull down and yes blocking runs.
