A Five Minute Slot For Refs On The Sunday Game

(Oldest Posts First)

Kerry SFC final referee Brendan Griffin has called for former referees to be given a five minute slot every week on the Sunday Game to discuss rules etc. Good idea?

Yes - so long as the referee on the panel wasn't afraid to say, when necessary, that certain decisions in matches that weekend were either questionable or just downright wrong.

Wouldn't want a referee panellist just cheerleading for other referees any more than you'd want a panellist from any county just cheerleading for that county.

I think it's a good idea, often on the terraces we here a fan roaring and shouting at the referee and in all honestly the ref would be 100% right. Even this year Joe brolly was questioning Gough after the drawn final and when he explained his decisions Joe was backtracking. The majority of pundits too could do with a crash course on the rules

They have to communicate better with players on the pitch first. Then yeah sure from time to time having a ref available to contact would make sense.

Why not mic up refs on pitch so you understand what ref actually are saying and awarding frees for.
Would do a lot more than having another ref in studio.

There should 2 or 3 minutes spare, now that they won't be bothering to cover any division 3 or 4 teams.

Think it would be a good idea if the slot was used specifically to explain the rules of the games (with perhaps using incidents from the games played that weekend to illustrate them in action).

At least 80% of the general public do not know the rules of the game. We all think we do without ever having read them but most of the time we are wrong!

Wouldn't see any other reason for having a referee on the panel.

Fair point.

We all like to think we're experts. The reality is that few of us are.
