Waterford manager Liam Cahill has aired his frustration over the decision to remove elite status from inter-county GAA activity.

Plans for the 2021 season have been thrown into early disarray after the Government told the GAA that gaelic games is not included among the current Level 5 elite sports exemptions.

Cahill admits he was not aware of the elite status change which leaves the GAA facing "a real headache" as the Association seeks to fulfil a season at both club and inter-county level despite uncertainty amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I for one wasn’t aware that had been taken away. It throws the whole championship up in the air," the Deise boss said when speaking to WLR FM radio.

"It’s a real headache for the GAA now. I know their hands are tied in a lot of respects because they are governed by the health authorities but it’s going to take a lot of manoeuvring to get a structured championship in place.

"It really looks like its going to be well in to the summer before we get back to the fields of play. It all depends what level of lockdown we’re at whether we can go with club or county first."
