The late Sean McGuinness managed both Antrim and Down's senior hurlers

Tributes have been pouring in following the death of former Antrim and Down hurling manager Sean McGuinness.

A native of Belfast, McGuinness steered both Antrim and Down to Ulster senior hurling championship titles in the 1980s and 1990s.

When Antrim made the breakthrough to reach the 1989 All-Ireland SHC final after defeating Offaly, then manager Jim Nelson acknowledged the role McGuinness had played to help the Saffrons get there.

For several years he managed Ulster’s Railway Cup hurling team, bringing them to three finals which included the 1995 decider when they lost out to Munster by a single point at Croke Park.

His club Sarsfields said they were "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our club stalwart Sean McGuinness".

"Sean was a life long club member who served our club in numerous roles over many years and he will be missed by our whole club and community," read a statement from the club.

"Our sincere condolences to his wife Eileen, his children Eileen, Colm, Orla, Sean Og, Clare Rose, Niall, Aisling and Emer and the whole family."
