Seniors defeat Four Masters in season opener

Gaeil Fhánada 3:15 Na Ceithre Maistrí 1:09

It was a very positive start to our Division 3 campaign on Sunday, as Aidan Mc Ateer’s charges delivered an accomplished display against a much changed Four Masters outfit in Páirc Uí Shiadhail.

Playing towards the clubhouse, with a slight breeze at their backs in the opening period, a strong start was imperative and the lads obliged, getting out of the blocks in the opening moments. Build up play involving Michael Sweeney, Séimí Nanny and Liam Mc Grenaghan created an opening opportunity for Mark Mc Ateer who obliged with a tidy score. Four Masters responded from a placed ball before Mc Ateer fed Séimí to edge the Gaels ahead in the in fifth minute. Séimí then combined well with Michael Sweeney who fisted to the net having done most of the running in the move to put Fanad four clear in the seventh minute. The visitors hit another free but that was to be as close as they’d get as the Gaels offensive play really got into gear. Eoghan Carr hit a booming score, while Oisín Shiels raced through the centre to hit a fine point to stretch the lead to 5. Shaun Horse pulled off a terrific save in the tenth minute to ensure the Gaels momentum wasn’t broken. Shay Travers pointed for the visitors before Bernard Mc Gettigan had his say with two terrific points. Alan Mc Ateer extended the Gaels lead in the 23rd minute finishing a move involving Odhrán Shiels, Mc Ateer and Eoghan Carr. The next point was a thing of beauty. Michael Sweeney turned the ball over in middle third, and within the blink of an eye Mark Mc Ateer pointed with Jimmy Coyle and Alan Mc Ateer involved in some slick passing. Shay Travers and Ryan Hegarty pointed for the visitors before a fine Jimmy Coyle run was match by a Ryan Mc Gonigle shot which sailed through the posts. As the first half reached the 30th minute, Sweeney was upended beyond the 45 and Liam Mc Grenaghan confidently stepped up and fired over the black spot. Travers pointed in response for Four Masters, while a combination of Shaun Kerr and Odhrán Shiels averted a potentially dangerous situation in front of goal before the half time whistle. Gaeil Fhánada 1:11 Na Ceithre Maistrí 0:04.

Four Masters looked lively in the opening exchanges of the second period but the Gaels full back line did enough to thwart a couple of decent chances. Fanad got a stroke of luck in the fourth minute however, as a Liam Mc Grenaghan shot rebounded of the post into the grateful hands of Mark Mc Ateer who neatly placed the ball into the corner. The next point arrived three minutes later, the move beginning inside the 14 with a super Shaun Kerr tackle. Ryan Mc Gonigle and Jimmy Coyle moved the ball down the field and Bernard Mc Gettigan supplied the finishing touch for his third point. Séimí Nanny put the result to bed ten minutes into the second half, rounding Martin Cassidy in the Four Masters goal before firing to the net.  The visitors registered the next two points before Mark Mc Ateer fired over his fourth of the afternoon after a mazy run. The game lost a bit of intensity in the final quarter. The visitors lost a man to the sin bin on a black card in the 23rd minute. Michael Sweeney and Jimmy Coyle fired over the final scores of the day for the Gaels while the dangerous Killian Faulkner rounded off the scoring for the visitors, converting a penalty in the final minute of normal time and finding his range with a decent point.

It was a good day at the office for the lads, and while there will be things to work on they’ll be pleased with the 3:15 they hit over the hour. Another pleasing aspect with the work rate of the lads who played with determination from start to finish. Another big challenge awaits next weekend with a trip to Naomh Bríd on the cards.

Four Masters too strong for reserves

Na Ceithre Maistrí 2:08 Gaeil Fhánada 0:04

It wasn’t to be for the reserves on Sunday in their league opener as Four Masters deservedly took the spoils in a dour encounter in Portsalon.

The endeavour couldn’t be questioned but the lack of football over a long period of time seemed to take its toll on the day, as things just didn’t quite click.

The opening period was fairly even, with much of the football played in the middle third, as both sides cancelled each other out. The visitors took a two point lead before Enda Coll fired over a free to land the Gaels’ opening score. The half time score read Four Masters 0:03 Gaeil Fhánada 0:02, Coll again notching a fine score from play.

The second period was played with the same script until the water break, where a Coll free was Gaeil Fhánada’s answer to three Four Masters points. Two quick goals for the visitors after the break in play settled this tie, leaving the lads with too much to do! Coll again found his range, and although Fanad had a couple of half chances at goal, Four Masters deserved their victory on the day. Best for the Gaels were Pauric Clinton and Liam Sweeney, while Enda Coll will be reasonably happy with his personal tally of four points. Next up is Naomh Bríd next weekend.

Mark Mc Conigley, Pauric Clinton, Liam Sweeney, Joe Blaney, Charlie Crerand, Fergal Friel, Eoin Mc Gonigle, Brandon Mc Clafferty, Oisín Mc Fadden, Paul Coyle, Patsy Friel, James Kerr, Paddy Heraghty, Enda Coll (0:04), Joshua Mc Ateer. Declan Coyle for Blaney, Shaun Coyle for Crerand,

Aidan Mc Ateer for Mc Ateer, Conor Mc Conigley for Heraghty.

Mac Cumhaills prevail in U15 encounter

Our U15’s travelled to play Mac Cumhaills in their second outing of the season on Monday evening. The lads played very well in spells, creating plenty scoring opportunities over the hour. The hosts however, were deserving victors on the evening.

Alan and his management team took plenty positives from the game and are looking forward to their next clash with Milford next Monday.

U13’s record victory in Lifford

Our under 13 boys got their league campaign off to a good start with an excellent performance against Naomh Pádraig Lifford on Friday evening. Regulars, Harry Blaney, Conor Callaghan, Christian Gibbons, Iosaf Mc Ateer and Dan Martin were ably assisted by two new additions to the team in Evan Mc Daid and Conor Friel who both played very well and got on a lot of ball over the hour. The first of many games in a Gaeil Fhánada jersey we hope.

A special mention goes to the 8 boys from the u11 team who more than helped us on the night. Kieran Carr, Michael Peoples, Cillian Gilmour, Tiernan Kerr, Oisin Lynch, Jack Dunleavy, Ronan Wilson and Darragh Boyce.
