Mark Dorrian and Siobhan Coyle to referee Senior and Intermediate Finals

The club received great news over the course of the weekend, with the news that Mark Dorrian was appointed to take charge of the Senior Championship Final, while Siobhán Coyle has been tasked with the Intermediate decider.

These are huge achievements for both Mark and Siobhan on a personal level, but it is also a huge honour for the club to be represented on two of the biggest days of the calendar in the county.

We’re not sure how often if ever that it’s happened in the past, but it’s great testament to the ability and dedication of both Mark and Siobhan to have been trusted with such big occasions.

Mark was in the middle for the Intermediate Final last term, but the senior final is surely his biggest game to date. Siobhan has lots of big match experience as well, with the senior ladies final between Glenfin and Termon already under her belt this year. She has also officiated in Croke Park on the biggest day of the ladies calendar, as she was on the line for the All Ireland Senior Final last year.

Comhghairdeas ar an bheirt agaibh, agus go n-éirí go hiontach libh ag an deireadh seachtaine.

U16 Girls defeated in Gaoth Dobhair

Gaoth Dobhair 3:07 Gaeil Fhánada 2:07

Hard luck to our u16 girls team who came out on the wrong side of a ding dong battle in Gaoth Dobhair on Sunday morning.

It was a glorious morning in Machaire Gathlán, and neither team disappointed with fully committed displays from start to finish. The Gaels led at the break, but had Iseult Ní Mhathúna to thank for a couple of super saves.

Gaoth Dobhair pressed hard in the second half, but the Fanad girls also stood up and were counted. The hosts hit a couple of goals midway through the half to move into the lead. Olivia Friel deputised between the posts after an injury to Iseult and she also pulled off an outstanding save. The Gaels again rallied, scoring the final three points, but couldn’t muster that elusive goal which would’ve gained a share of the spoils.

The game was a brilliant advertisement for Gaelic football, with both teams giving it their all. The girls deserve great credit for an outstanding team effort, with the half back line of Caitlin Heraghty, Ella Mc Bride and Jessica Coll to the fore throughout. Well done to Méabh Duffy who will captain the team this year. Next up is a trip to Termon next weekend!

Iseult Ní Mhathúna, Aoife Sweeney, Méabh Duffy, Ella Mc Bride, Caitlin Heraghty (1:01), Jessica Coll, Aoife Gibbons, Marie Kerr (0:02), Rachael Friel (0:01), Kate Sweeney (1:01), Emma Hunter (0:01), Roisín Carr, Natalie Mc Fadden (0:01), Olivia Friel.

U12 Boys

Another good run out for the u12 boys on Monday evening, this time at home against Milford. Milford had a strong squad with them and it took our boys a while to get to grips with the pace of the game. Kieran Carr made his debut at u12 level and performed very well between the posts. Harry Blaney showed great composure in defence and Gavin Mc Ateer covered every blade of grass over the hour. Oisin Lynch had spells in goals, defence and up front and was very effective in every position. Iosaf Mc Ateer and Christian  Gibbons also had good run outs and showed great determination to get on the ball. The youngest player on the field, Colin mc Bride, ended the night with two scores which was nothing less than he deserved. A lot of positives to be taken from the game, a few things for us to work on.

A big thanks to our other u10 boys who are vital to this team, Jack Dunleavy and Cillian Gilmore.

Ciaran Carr, Oisin Lynch, Cillian Gilmore, Jack Dunleavy, Colin Mc Bride, Harry Blaney, Iosaf Mc Ateer, Dan Martin, Christian Gibbons, Ronan Mc Veigh, Conor Callaghan, Gavin Mc Ateer, Cormac Dunleavy.

U10’s

Thanks to everyone for a great evening of football last Friday, September 18th. There were some seriously competitive games in Downings. The girls were very strong and dominated their game whilst the boys held their own and were rewarded for their efforts when they really got going when they put their head down.

Leadership was evident in both the girls and boys teams and hopefully the improvement will continue with more games. If anyone accidentally forgot to return their jersey will you take it to the next training session.

Training resumes in Portsalon next Friday at 6pm and we hope to play Milford on Sunday week.
