Alan Dillon Comparing GAA Referees With Soccer

(Oldest Posts First)

Soccer getting some bad press lately.
Fair play to Alan Dillon for needlessly draging the GAA into it through the Irish Independent.
Maybe he should compare the violence after the FAI cup final to All Ireland Final day too.
Chalk & cheese my friend!

Indeed. Sad day when anyone thinks that we have anything to learn from that gang of losers. Hopefully, IRFU will stop hosting their annual freebie now.

I never take much notice of utterances from former GAA players or officials who are involved in politics. Generally speaking, their comments are made with one eye on the electorate.

A lot of abuse the Refs get in both Soccer and Gaelic is because they are not good at their jobs and loose control of the game. A good example is the broken jaw of McLaughlin of Mayo in semi final and neither the ref or linesman did anything, in fairness the ref may have missed it as he was following the play, but linesman was looking directly at it and no action was taken, Funny how rugby Refs are always in control of their games.taken.

Couple of things on this ..

1. Some refs in soccer & gaa are not good enough, granted. Do they deserve abuse because of this?? Or does this abuse deter other (maybe better refs from doing the job).

2. You've clearly never reffed in your lifetime (or you just don't know the rules) as you don't seem to be aware of what the referee and linesman can & cannot call. The linesman can only alert the referee to an issue / incident if the referee has missed it I.e., off the ball, after the play etc etc. Going back to the incident that you speak of, Conor Lane saw it and waved play on. Yes he absolutely got it wrong, but unfortunately the linesman is actually powerless to do anything about it in that situation.

3. If we want better referees, abusing the bad ones certainly is not the answer. We need to treat referees better, train them better and help them progress. The standard of training of referees in most counties is absolutely abysmal. Also an Intercounty referee gets next to nothing for doing a game, 50c a mile or something along those lines and find 4 umpires to come with you for next to nothing. That's not easy.

Very easy sit back and criticise refs, go out and do it yourself and see how you get on!

It is a societal thing and getting into we're better than them is nothing but bull.

Re the scenes before the FAI Cup final, I've seen plenty worse on a GAA pitch. Generally never at I/C level, but everyone on here has seen some of the brawls at various club fixtures. So we would be better off not getting into that debate.

The abuse from the terraces on any given Sunday at a GAA match is scandalous. Is it better or worse than soccer??? Who cares, the only question we need to ask is, is it acceptable? We as GAA people should not be complacent.

Rassie Erasmus got a nice long ban for disrespecting the ref during the Lions tour. He was going to appeal but obviously someone had a word with him. Rugby does not tolerate this sort of rubbish and teams generally will not appeal bans. They accept they have done wrong and take the punishment. This is what we should aim for in our game. Not endless "whataboutery", looking for loopholes and never ending appeals.

Worldwide pandemic crisis, housing & rental crisis, hospitals overrun, schools at breaking point, inflation jumping, energy crisis with threats of blackouts, insurance still scamming people, people on zero contract hours & minimum wage jobs, criminals running riot with 100's convictions, drugs awash in every part of the country, most expensive hospital ever built in the world, the list of serious problems in this country is endless & all this genius can be concerned about is referees's, beggars belief & calls into question his abilities.
The most high profile GAA referee in the country has even come out & dismissed his statement.

Why do we elect people like this, this guy is one of the 166 people elected to run the country & his only contribution is about refereeing. Let the individual sports bodies who have lots of very highly paid staff & CEO's sort out the issues around referees, that is their job & if they can't run their organisation let the members get rid of them. No surprise that his party are sliding down the polls, people who have zero interest in running the State for the betterment of its citizens, only concerned about vested interests, vulture funds or setting themselves up for big jobs in Europe or the U.N. & are so far out of their depth in doing so. Parish Pump Politicians.

Dillon is typical of the Mayo team he played on, serial losers who made more noise off the field to try and stay relevant.

Thats a complete load of crap and the refs even if poor dont deserve abuse for it. And rugby refs arent always in control of their games but the laws of the game and assistance they can receive be it from their assistants on the pitch or in pro game with TMO means they are helped far more. even off pitch the training and development refs get at any level is miles above what it could be in GAA.

Good post but how would you change it? Mileage for refs in nearly all sports is poor but where do you get all that income to spend on refs?? Increasing mileage and what pay refs get doesnt get better refs. its the training, coaching sessions from ref development officers that improves refs..

Rugby referees have made complete cock ups of crucial matches at the highest level. In 2017 Lions series the ref awarded a late penalty correctly to NZ but then decided as match was a draw to award a scrum. Beyond farcical. In 2015 WC Scotland were robbed against Australia by a ref who blew the final whistle as he ran for the tunnel. Laughable if it wasn't so serious. Rugby officials not nearly as respected as we're led to believe. The numbers playing each week are far fewer than GAA or soccer, hence fewer controversial incidents

As a public representative it is his job to highlight stuff. This puts the pressure on the organsations in question to sort their house out.

I have no affiliation to AD football or political wise but reading some of the above comments, while they could not be described as vicious (very mild to be fair), they still attacked the messenger rather than the message and shows how personalised comments have become the norm in society. We should not therefore be surprised when abuse starts on football, rugby, soccer pitches...... outside chippers etc.

This has become an all to common trend on this form. Some great robust debates, opinion, fact, counter fact, great to read but then you get someone who decides to attack the messenger.

It has got to the stage that you would want to be a masochist to be a referee or a politician. If we keep the abuse going online/offline who will do the job???? what will we be left with???? the cream of the crop.......i don't so.

Personally if I was guaranteed to be elected I still wouldn't become a TD and not a hope would I referee a game. You only know you've done a good job if everyone hates you equally!

Nobody is saying rugby referees dont make mistakes. theyre human. Rugby referees are respected far more than soccer, gaa refs though. yes there is less playing but even taking that into account there is far less incidents of abuse/controversial incidents in rugby...

Was Dillon not speaking as the deputy chair of the Dáil's Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media?

I believe he was. Now all the issues you mentioned in your rant are serious but Mr Dillon and the Dail sport committee won't be solving them.

Re your point that "Mr Dillon & the Dail sporting committee won't be sorting the serious issues" I pointed out, well if you think that's all he or any of his colleagues, are up there to do, then they shouldn't be there in my opinion. People are at their wits end with the standard of politics in this country.
Listen, his Dept. covering Tourism, Arts & Culture where thousands of people are out of work once again due to the sector been targeted for lockdown or restrictions again. People in this industry are struggling to survive & pay their bills/mortgages. The Tourism sector in his Dept. is on its knees & many of these businesses pubs, hotels, nightclubs will never reopen again with thousands of job losses. It is the same story with Arts & Culture, gigs, musicians, actors, sound & lighting etc all just back & now been targeted again. All because our elected representatives have over seen a Health Service that can't cope & other sectors of society have to pay a price & their livelihood. So my point, not "rant" as you deem it, is that as an elected representative he should be prioritising these sectors not worrying over referees in various sports, which is the role of the varying sporting bodies. Anybody who thinks that people's livelihoods, jobs & futures should be down the pecking order below referees is in cuckoo land. Anyone who is offended by this been pointed out, needs to take their head out of the sand.
Anyhow, I have no interest on this becoming a Galway/Mayo or political party thing or sparring with the usual suspects, my point is fairly simple if people don't like it, I couldn't give two hoots.
