The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 7 Like(s)

Replying To SurelyToGod:  "We have the most underfunded health service in the EU, and the fewest hospital beds, and ICU beds, per capita in the EU. Our health service is under severe pressure, and at present it is stretched thin in trying to manage the upcoming flu season without the added demand that COVID-19 is threatening. Spare us your drivel."
Sorry but incorrect. We are among the higher spenders of health per capita in the EU: [url=]https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/-/DDN-20181129-2

The Greatest Groundhurlers - 2 Like(s)
When ground hurling works it can be breathtaking but sadly the percentages are just not there for it to be an option. I was watching a Juvenile match last summer and a young lad was scoring lovely points from the ground. He was missing half the chances too and the manger screaming at him to pick it up. A bit sad really.

Great win indeed. I always wonder why we are hardly ever mentioned when there is a discussion on second tier leinster counties.

Well our club is continuing training as normal. How can there be any enforcement of this?

Replying To Optimisticobserver:  "It is a competition called the Peadar O Liathain. I have no idea what teams are in it but it seems to be a competition for weaker hurling counties or development squads. It is a semi final so there must be very few teams invited or entered and I guess it must be for Leinster counties only. Can anyone explain who Peadar O Liathain was or is?"
Looks like it's a version of the B championship for 2020. Only 4 teams in it. Louth and Down in the other semi. Meath are probably the strongest team in it. A bit sad that our minor hurlers only get one outing this year.

I see the minor hurlers are back in Leinster tier 2 this year. Great to see them back at this level. I hope they don't just restrict it to 2006 born players only. There are some class hurlers in Arklow, Bray and St Pats from last year's u15s that should get a look in...

Galway vs Wexford (hurling) - 1 Like(s)
Teams to wear their alternative jerseys. Galway - white and wexford - gold. Both wearing light coloured Jerseys. IMO it would be better if only one team wore their alternative.

Replying To wicklowsupport:  "I think there is sufficient evidence available to say that there is a direct correlation between the club and county scene. Woth what i read, the wicklow hurlers are where they deserve to be. The whole hurling setup in the county is a shambles. The county are beating themselves before the players take the field. Will the county hurlers continued demise be discussed at county board level? As there needs to be something done before next season."
For a county with at least a dozen clubs fielding adult hurling teams, its a disgrace. We should be competitive with Carlow, Kildare, Meath etc..

Just a comment on the Kildare team. I doubt if any of their imports would be on the county panels of their home counties. If that's the case, are they really much better than local strong inter county hurlers? Now, if Kildare poached the top hurlers from Liam McCarthy counties, it would be a different story.

Over 120 lads showed up for u13 trials on Friday. Surely we have a panel in that group who are as good as any in the country? There was also 12 coaches from the clubs. Personally I would take the selection process out of their hands but it's a hard one to call...

Where's Mikey Lee these days? Surely he's worth a few extra points per match? Anyway, looks like Meath are the team to beat in this.

Every now and then a second tier hurling county takes a big scalp. Down did it in the early nineties and others did it before that. It's very rare that a breakthrough is made into tier 1, hopefully this will happen for Carlow, hurling needs it.

Hurling In A Different County - 1 Like(s)
Thanks all. Yes, it is wexford. This lad has inter county aspirations and I believe he's well capable of it from what I've seen of him. So basically, he'd have to drop the football (which he's very handy at too) or move to a hurling club in Wicklow? Either would be devastating for him...

Hurling, a national game? - 1 Like(s)
I'm surprised my own county doesn't do better in the hurling. We have about 10 clubs that play and the top few are some serious good sides and could complete with most clubs in the country. Yet, we are considered a football county (not even a dual county) and are pretty woeful at the football these days!

See this a lot myself. Unfortunately, once these lads get into managing a team, very little will budge them. You can't really change ignorance.

I was at the hurling match. Only one Bray player started. Not sure where the rest of them were. We'll need them back if we are to compete. Kildare seemed a step above us in most areas. On the juvenile front I hear there are big changes afoot in the academy squads. Limited parental involvement in squad selection and management from now on. Can only be a good thing if we have the resources to fund it.

Our juveniles seem to be flying in the football. The u16s,u15s and u14s all won their matches today. I was in Balinakill earlier and watched the u14s beat Offaly well. We have the talent, just need to keep them interested...

Connacht Hurling Championship Without Galway - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Observer23:  "Appreciate there are issues. Not really saying it is an amalgamation. Tyrone would still play in Christy Ring for instance and then best players out of that team would join an Ulster squad, which play 3 round robin games against other teams in same situation and maybe then get a crack at winner of McDonagh finalist /3rd place tier 1 group team if they are in top-2. Team would probably only come together 4-6 weeks, they will train with their counties the rest of the time. Completely get that there are challenges but I think good players in these counties would like to have a go at it, even if it meant driving for 1-2 hours to training for a period. In places like Cork or Galway, players will often have to drive >1hr to make training. No perfect solution here but status quo is not showing enough results either"
Totally agree. There needs to be a path to Liam McCarthy for all players irrespective of their county of birth.

Replying To supersub15:  "What is the standard, and number of hurling clubs etc. that London pick their players from, I'm aware that they are at the bottom of 2A on 1 point, Roscommon are on the bottom of 2B with 0 points, very little between them, hardly 0-23. Kildare are joint second from the top of 2A on 7 points, Wicklow are second from the top of 2B on 8 points, yet Wicklow beat Kildare in their own back yard 3-18 to 2-19 The same Wicklow team second from the top in 2B came out and beat London in 2A 0-17 to 0-16, back to Roscommon, even allowing for the fact that London would beat them, do you not think that thing called passion would have helped them in no small way to keeping the final score to single figures like those mentioned in this post. Yes I am aware that Down won the CR Cup final in 2013 on the fourth attempt, not bad going, that win qualified them to play in the senior hurling championship the following year. I thought it a bit interesting that in 1993 Down senior hurlers beat Kilkenny senior hurlers in a div 1 game, question, is there any team in Div 2A or 2B today, excluding Down that can say they beat Kilkenny in a senior hurling Div. 1 game. If I was managing a team in the CR competition this Saturday I would give that team the same respect as I would give Mayo, Roscommon, Down, or Kilkenny, we are after all comparing results in the CR comp. not where teams are placed in the NHL divisions, but seeing as some posters brought it into the debate, so be it. Can I suggest, Roscommon, Down, Mayo, and London, are in the CR comp. on merit not on sympathy votes or by default, they are made of better stuff than that, Carlow may have beaten Mayo by 0-23 but I have already forgotten that, it's the next game I would be thinking about, not to mention the Down v London game, - - - - and who know's I might even make that one."
Wicklow hurlers seem to be a big surprise to everyone this year but the reasoning is quite simple. Last year we had a disastrous year due to a poor management setup and we suffered because of that. This year we have a very respected manager and coach. Some PR was done and we had 40 lads on the panel training in January and a plan for the year. We are now back beating teams that we used to be competitive with (except Meath!). The CR semi-final will be a very tough match and I think it will be close. We may not be at the level of Carlow/Antrim yet but that is the goal.

Laois Football's Big Handicap - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Onion Breath:  "As a matter of fact graiguecullen is not in Leix but no point in arguing that one with you given that from the start of this you've had the blinkers on. But, whether it's in county Carlow or county Leix it's very much in Carlow town and it's not as if Graigecullen only poach their players from their side of town either. You're right all counties have players with parents from bordering counties but in the case of Leix the attitude is if he's any good and one parent is from Leix then at all costs he must play for Leix. Worse than the FAI chasing English born youngsters. Anyway, where'd you get this notion Portlaoise has a population of 30,000? And you say the only town with a big population with just one club? Just staying in Leinster alone, I can think of Navan and Bray who are far bigger but have one club, while Naas, Balbriggan, Greystones and Celbridge would be the same size as Portlaoise and also have just one club. Never thought of them did you?"
Pedantic but Bray have two clubs, Bray Emmets and Fergal Og. Greystones and Kilcoole grounds are only about 2 miles apart. Both thriving clubs.
