Munster club hurling champions Sarsfields are to rename their club grounds after the legendary Teddy McCarthy.

Club members unanimously decided at their AGM on Wednesday night to honour their most famous son by naming the redeveloped Riverstown grounds – which were devastated by flooding last year – after him. They will also unveil a statue of the late, great Cork dual star at their grounds on April 5 next year.  

McCarthy passed away suddenly in June 2023 at the age of 58. He was the only player to have won All-Ireland medals in both football and hurling in the same year which he achieved in 1990. He scored three points from midfield in Cork's All-Ireland SHC final victory over Galway before lining out at wing forward for the footballers in their All-Ireland final defeat of Meath a fortnight later.

Sarsfields are currently preparing for Sunday’s All-Ireland club SHC semi-final against Ulster champions Slaughtneil.
