UL and DCU through to Sigerson semi-finals

February 03, 2022

5-16 in three Sigerson Cup games for David Clifford.

UL and DCU have joined NUIG and MTU Kerry in the Sigerson Cup semi-finals following their quarter-final victories yesterday.

David Clifford bagged 2-4 for UL in a 2-12 to 0-13 win over Queen's University in Abbotstown, bringing his total to an incredible 5-16 in three games. The Kerry star scored 1-1 in the first half, but Queen's - for whom Armagh's Conor Turbitt shot 0-8 - still led by 0-8 to 1-4 at half-time.

But an unanswered 1-3 from Clifford between the 37th and 44th minutes enabled the Limerick students to pull away.

DCU are also through to the last four after coming from behind to record a 2-12 to 2-11 victory over Ulster University.

With Derry’s Niall Loughlin and Down’s Andrew Gilmore in fine scoring form, UU led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval, but the 2020 champions came storming back after the restart. A goal from Laois' Mark Barry brought them back into it before Niall Loughlin responded at the other end to keep UU in front, 1-10 to 1-7.

But DCU then reeled off 1-4 without reply, with Sligo’s Red Óg Murphy netting from a penalty after he was fouled himself, to take the lead. Tyrone All-Ireland winner Darragh Canavan pulled back a late goal, but the Dublin outfit survived by the skin of their teeth.
