Colm Bonnar has stepped down from his role as Carlow senior hurling manager.

The Tipperary All-Ireland winner spent four years at the helm in the Dolmen County, steering Carlow to the inaugural Joe McDonagh Cup in 2018 and a place in the top-tier of the All-Ireland SHC. Under Bonnar, Carlow progressed from the Christy Ring Cup to the Liam MacCarthy Cup in the space of two seasons.

Another highlight of his reign was holding then All-Ireland champions Galway to a draw in their Allianz League Division 1 clash at Netwatch Cullen Park last February. However, in 2020, Carlow endured a disappointing campaign which yielded relegation to Division 2A in the league and one win from four Joe McDonagh Cup matches.

"Carlow GAA wishes to express its immense gratitude and appreciation to Colm for the role he has played in our hurling development over the past 4 years," Carlow GAA confirmed the news in a statement last night.

"A thoroughly professional attitude and a real grá for his ‘adopted’ county were some hallmarks of his time.

"We are sorry to see him go but so thankful for the time he spent with us.

"A céad míle, míle fáilte will always await Colm Bonnar when he sets foot in Carlow, we wish him and his family every health and happiness for the future."
