A late point from Oldcastle’s Pat Crawley completed a dramatic comeback for Meath Schools in this Leinster P.P. Schools Senior Football 'A' Group Teams final at Pairc Tailteann.
With five minutes remaining Meath trailed 1-12 to 1-7 and looked to be on their way to a defeat. Castletown’s Darragh Weldon made it a four point game before substitute Mylo Hussey bundled the ball over the Maynooth line for a goal. Drumbaragh’s Jake Madden punched over the equaliser in the second minute of injury time before Crawley fired over an unlikely winner before the full time whistle.
The Oldcastle star along with club mate Thomas Sheridan and Gaeil Colmcille’s Shane Callaghan had lined out with their clubs the night before in the Under 19 Division 2 FC final at Dunganny. Half back Sean McKeown was also in action last night when Wolfe Tones defeated Donaghmore Ashbourne in the Under 21 Division 3 HC final also at the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence.
Jake Madden got the scoreboard working before keeper Shayne Brady put the young Royals two up from a free. The sides were level at 0-2 each by the end of the first quarter. A brilliant individual goal from full forward Weldon proved the crucial score before the half time whistle and the home side went to the dressing room 1-4 to 0-4 in front.
The visitors had the the wind in the second half and playing into the O’Mahonys end set about reducing the lead. By the 7th minute a goal from Aaron Larkin had them in front of 1-8 to 1-5. Points from Ciaran Dunne and Darragh Devine opened up a five point gap and the Kildare side seemed to be on their way to a comfortable win.
To their credit Meath kept battling and were rewarded with that late late comeback.
After the game Meath County Board Secretary Ciaran Flynn presented the cup to Meath captain Lewis Cassidy.
