James 'Jas' Murphy captained Kerry against Armagh in the 1953 All-Ireland SFC final
Kerry’s oldest surviving All-Ireland winning captain James ‘Jas’ Murphy has died at the age of 98.
Murphy captained the Kingdom in the 1953 All-Ireland SFC final against Armagh at Croke Park, where the Munster champions reigned supreme in a 0-13 to 1-06 victory in front of just over 86,000 fans.
The Tralee native would also win Munster SFC medals with Kerry in 1950 and ’53, having originally started his inter-county career with Cork with whom he played for two years in 1947 and ’48.
The stylish corner-back started his club career with Kerins O'Rahilly’s in Tralee and, after joining the An Garda Síochána, he was transferred to Cobh where he played with the Garda team that captured the Cork SFC crown in 1950.
Murphy's passing leaves Mick O'Connell, Kerry's captain when they defeated Galway in the 1959 All-Ireland SFC final, as the Kingdom's oldest living winning captain.
