Ó Sé can't see how Mayo are going to replace O'Connor

Cillian O'Connor fires in Mayo's second goal against Meath at Croke Park

Kerry legend Marc Ó Sé says Dublin are the only county that could handle losing a player of the calibre of Mayo’s Cillian O’Connor and still go on and win big prizes.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that O’Connor suffered an Achilles Tendon injury in the Connacht champions’ win over Clare at the weekend and was set to undergo surgery this week.

It leaves the Ballintubber sharpshooter’s championship participation in serious doubt and, speaking on The42 GAA Weekly, five-time All-Ireland winner Ó Sé says it’s hard to see Mayo replacing a player of that calibre.

“For me, Dublin are the only team in the country that can deal with injuries,” said the former Kingdom defender.

“If you take Jack McCaffrey, he went last year and Robbie McDaid comes in – he had an unbelievable year. [Stephen] Cluxton is out at the moment, it’s no big deal, Evan Comerford is doing the job.

“You see Dean Rock out, that’s okay Cormac Costello can come in and he can be top scorer. So, they can afford to lose players of that calibre and still replace them.

“For Mayo, unfortunately if Cillian O’Connor is not available to them, I can’t see how they’re going to replace a player of that calibre. Every other county in Ireland with the exception of Dublin is in the exact same bracket.”
