There was much sadness in the parish of Moynalty and Newcastle at the sad and untimely passing of Gerry Carolan of Carnaville, Moynalty, former Chairperson of Moynalty GAA.

Gerry played underage football with Moynalty at a time when the late Fr Tully was in charge of the juvenile section of the club. Fr Tully would pick up Gerry and other young players from the Newcastle end of the Parish and bring them up to the pitch in Moynalty. Gerry progressed from juvenile, minor and through to adult level football.

Gerry would later go on to follow in Fr Tully’s footsteps to coach and manage a number of underage teams and like Fr Tully drive around the parish to make sure players got to and from training and games. Gerry and the late Ken Nevin were a formidable management duo and coached a number of successful teams over the years. Since Gerry’s recent passing, former Moynalty players have reminisced how Gerry and Ken treated them to the occasional choc-ice or magnum after an away game in Cussen’s Filling Station in the village. Gerry also filled the role of selector of the adult teams. He was an impartial and fair-minded selector and always took the time to lend advice to players, when required.

It was however when Gerry was elected onto the Executive of Moynalty GFC that he displayed his true leadership qualities. He served in various roles off the field, however it will be as Chairperson that he will be most fondly remembered. Gerry’s hard work and dedication to the club is clearly demonstrated by the positive developments which took place under his tenure as Chairperson. Gerry will be remembered as a practical, level headed and committed Chairperson.

He was a fantastic Meath GAA supporter and followed the team around the country, particularly during the glory years of Meath GAA. He also had a great work ethic. He was always well recognized in his milk tanker which he drove all over the county. 

When the time came for him to conclude as chairman he continued to be an active supporter of the club by selling our lotto tickets while out on his milk round. This support was always appreciated by Moynalty GAA.

He was very proud of his family who played at different stages for the club down through the years.

In his younger years, Gerry also enjoyed motor racing and served as Secretary of the North Meath Motor Club.

The entire club sends our sincere and heartfelt sympathies to his wife Caroline his sons, Paddy, Gerry, Bobby, Stephen, Mark and Martin, his daughters, Sabrina, Noeleen, and Caroline, brothers, Brendan and Tommy, sisters, Eileen, Mary Dolores, Kathleen, Bernadette and Angela and all his family, friends and neighbours.

Gerry’s funeral took place on Thursday 8th April in Moynalty Church and he was buried in the adjoining cemetery afterwards.
