Derry club retires number 15 jersey

Derry club Lavey have retired their number 15 jersey for the rest of the year in honour of the late Collie McGurk.

The move comes just a few weeks after the passing of the former club and county dual star, who wore the jersey when Lavey were crowned All-Ireland club champions in 1991.

The number 15 jersey hung in the dressing-room yesterday when the Erin's Own opened their Derry SFC campaign with a 0-11 to 0-8 win over Bellaghy.

"Our number 15 jersey, unused tonight, has been left vacant for the 2022 season in memory of the late, great Collie McGurk," the club said in a social media post.

As well as winning an All-Ireland club title with his beloved Lavey, Collie was part of the Derry squad that lifted the Sam Maguire in 1993. Hailing from a well-known GAA family, he also garnered an Ulster SHC medal in 2000, four Derry SFC titles and 12 Derry SHC medals in a glittering career. In addition, Colm managed the Oak Leaf hurlers to Nickey Rackard Cup and Ulster U21 successes in 2017.
