Former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins says he wasn’t surprise by Antrim’s shock win over Clare in the opening round of the Allianz Hurling League yesterday.

The Saffrons clinched a 1-21 to 0-22 over the visiting Banner men in Division 1 Group B, marking an extraordinary start to the 2021 campaign for Darren Gleeson’s charges.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme, Cummins says Gleeson has done “a fantastic job” since taking over the Glensmen in September 2019.

"It certainly wasn't any major surprise to me," said the two-time All-Ireland winner.

"Since Darren Gleeson took over the Antrim team last year having been a coach up there, he's done a fantastic job.

"The return of Neil McManus to full fitness... last year during the league and the Joe McDonagh, he'd only been a bit-part player.

“It was really frustrating as a hurling man looking at him coming on and you were wondering if he was going to break down (on Sunday) but he scored the points at the finish to get Antrim over the line."
