Well done to meath. My first match in croker was meath dublin in 86 or 87, always had a soft spot for meath after that. O'rourke has answered a lot of the pundits today with a defiant win. He has a brilliant management team, and a young exciting football team that I think in the coming years will trouble anyone So much of what they did today was based in a hunger to win, they worked hard wherewver they had to work. And attacked at pace. You can see the coaches mark on that, with o'rourkes stamp of footpassing. Two styles combining

Yes they should and actively, the gaa is not just a sport it's a cultural movement as much as a sport, and they should be unapologetic about it.

Kildare Vs Dublin - Leinster Final - 3 Like(s)
Very naive stuff from kildare, going man for man with that full forward line was a strange decision I doubt any other team would risk it. When they finally pulled in a sweeper they had him placed incorrectly so Dublin were just able to kick the ball over him. Dublin looked very sharp played some great ball into the forwards, they will put it up to any team on that showing, kildare have a lot of work to do, they are not as bad as that scoreline suggests but didn't look prepared at all for dublin

The virus doesn't care if you're pro or amateur. I'm assuming pros have families too and go shopping and meet people. It's a ridiculous argument. the games are on deal with it

Future Of Leinster Championship - 3 Like(s)
I think how the other counties are organised plays into the failure to challenge Dublins dominance. If I was to look at my own county the first thing that stands out is the amount of clubs, 28 in a small county like Carlow is too many, cut that in half and you have 14 mid to large sized clubs instead of the current 3 or 4 mid to large sized clubs, clubs should be coming together to maximize their potential, as it stands many clubs can't offer their players a pathway to senior that's able to match what a big club can. The argument about Dublin having so many advantages is repeated in most counties only with Dublin been replaced by the big local club who have the pick the facilities the finances etc etc. The solution is obvious, start sitting down with neighbouring clubs and seeing how they can join up and take on the big clubs, offering players the best possible pathway to senior, sort out the internal issues that are holding you back and in turn you will see the counties fortunes change as well. The argument with Dublin often seems to be how can we bring them back down rather than how the rest of us can rise up, that in my opinion is the wrong way to look at this

Kerry V Dublin - 3 Like(s)
It was an enjoyable game clearly Kerry were more up for it early on but I think over all Dublin will be fairly happy, they outplayed Kerry for most of the second half in a game where Kerry probably should have been out of sight at half time, I wouldn't read to much into results in February though, and I don't think Dublin will lose much sleep over it.

Splitting The Championship In Two. - 3 Like(s)
No. This would not work I'm 100% sure about it. You only have to look at the shc to know it won't work. Not one team from the Christy ring has established themselves as a senior team. Attendances are tiny as people are not interested in B competitions. The gaa has a long history or ignoring B competitions, remember when the Christy ring first started the final was played before an allireland semi or quarter final. Now it's played in a mostly empty croke park. Then we have the Tommy Murphy cup most teams didn't bother entering in the first cpl of years and then when the did it was near impossible to find players willing to play in it, also how do you decide who goes into this B competition, I'm sure many would be in favour of it until they find out there own county will be in it. Why are the gaa hierarchy so intent on messing with our games all these changes that nobody asked for.

I think a full house in newbridge would have a great atmosphere as opposed to a mostly empty croke park, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, Carlow laois and Wicklow have had to give up home advantage in the last few years.

I think it should return to 18s, finishing underage football/hurling at 17 is too young, all we are doing at present is handing over our 17s to other sports, many don't return.

Congrats to monaghan, went up as neutrals to watch the game, came away with such a great impression of the monaghan supporters, we went into kavanaghs for a bite to eat and two fellas from donaghmoyne gave us two seats had a great chat with them, met a couple of monaghan minors outside, nice chaps full of chat. We were sat behind a family from monaghan at the game, they gave it socks, was delighted for them at the end. Best of luck in the semis.

Football Max Passes Limit - 3 Like(s)

Replying To centerfield:  "This passing the ball around the place timewasting has gone beyond a joke. Teams get 3-4 pts up towards the end and starts playing keep ball for 5-6 min. Max pass limit should be put into place in rules. e.g after 8 passes you must shoot. if team doesn't shoot possession given to opposition keeper. Will force teams to attack not mind their lead"
All that will do is encourage a more defensive game, fill up more space in the backline forcing the opposition to pass more to get back possession, a good way to kill the sport.

Football Is Finished - 2 Like(s)
I don't know how anyone could not find what Dublin do attractive to watch, their skill levels are off the charts, look at how comfortable they are left or right hand or foot, people seem to think it's witchcraft or bought in it's not though it's down to the method, my son trains with two footballs so he does both sides at the same time when he is working on his skills, the improvement in his skills since we started doing that have been huge, most clubs don't do anything like that, so many players arrive on the inter county scene as 50% players that's already a huge gap and didn't cost a cent. Funding will only go so far and throwing money around without a plan will be money wasted. I know of one county who spent 50k on a week's training camp 20 miles down the road, that money could have been spent more wisely than that. look at the money counties and clubs waste on journeymen coaches every year, there is literally millions wasted and usually for minimal gain if any as only one team can win, clubs paying out thousands for senior managers whilst their juvenile section doesn't have enough footballs. Long-term planning with realistic goals and accountability for not reaching them would be a good starting point in most counties

Galway Vs Dublin - 2 Like(s)
So easy for Dublin today, this is starting to look like the handiest all Ireland so far for them, you can't but admire the way they go about their business, I don't think either Tyrone or Monaghan believe they can beat Dublin either, we saw this with Kilkenny in the latter part of the last decade, just steamrolling cork Limerick and Waterford, and only against Tipp in 09 did they actually look beatable. With Kerry and mayo probably going to take a while to rebuild there doesn't seem to be an obvious contender to take on Dublin, I think the attendance today reflected the fact that Galway people knew they hadn't a hope and Dublin people knew they would win without breaking a sweat. Still I enjoy watching dublin, their style of play is great to watch and their scoring records are incredible.

A big weekend for the football championships, starting out with senior, old leighlin pulled off the result of the weekend with a big performance last night, solid at the back and countering at pace. They now face rathvilly with the winner topping the group. Saturday night saw rathvilly and eire og battle it out in what was a very entertaining game, I felt the standard of football on display was excellent rathvilly just shading it but eire og could get to exact revenge before the year ends. Tinryland took a while to get going but their second half showing was a big improvement on week 1, bagenalstown kicked so many wides many of them unforced they will be disappointed after such a good start to the game Mlr were easy winners over fenagh who's only chance of survival would appear to be a possible eire og win at intermediate. My take away from the senior championship so far is the performances of the veterans, Brendan Murphy Sean gannon seamus kinsella Paul broderick benny kavanagh to name but a few , aside from Liam gavin I'm not seeing any breakthrough players. Rathvilly will be favorites to win it now but eire og and tinryland won't be far off them. Intermediate is starting to take shape. Eire og look strong, plenty of good young players coming through, kilbride will have to beat balinabranna to keep their chances alive and likewise kildavin will need a result or a close defeat against eire og to stay in the hunt. Tullow are going well on the other side whilst clonmore were held to a surprising draw against naomh eoin I'm going to predict a tullow eire og final, I think clonmore might need a bit of time before they are ready to step up. Junior is looking clearer now, o hanrahans had a good win over tinryland which guarantees them a quarter final spot atleast, fighting cocks had a great win away to leighlinbridge, they top the group and go straight to a semi. Ballon are looking good on the other side and will fancy themselves for it at this stage, both ballon and the cocks are starting to feel the benefit of st martins juvenile club now with both clubs adding division 1 footballers to their squads each year. A local Derby final would be great to see.

Inequality in County Funding - 2 Like(s)
I think there is far to much made of the fundings. Id like to see the breakdown of it, I'd imagine quite a bit is spent on the club school links, they can be quite expensive depending on how many schools you cover and how many coaches you use. I would imagine that account for a considerable amount of the Dublin funding. This boils down to priorities of county boards, div 4 teams spending vast sums of money bringing in senior team coaches that might be better spent on an extra coach or two for development squads. Or upskilling all your club coaches to the highest level. But that is not something that gives immediate results so it ends up not getting done, bad admin is the main reason many counties are lagging so far behind historical neglect, my own county and some neighboring counties have been guilty of this for years although I'd like to think we are on a better road now with a little more vision to the future. Clubs are similar, getting big expensive lights which you will never really get value for instead of building an indoor facility that you can use for all your teams from under 6 up, most will go with the lights as it is more senior oriented. Just some of my thoughts on it

Carlow GAA thread - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Smokeless Red:  "I remember coming on here nearly 20 years ago bemoaning the level that Carlow schools competed at. Knockbeg is technically in Co. Carlow, but it's heart is in Laois. The CBS won an All Ireland B 9 years ago, & I think 5 of that team went on to represent Carlow at senior level. I'm not close enough, but I don't think there's been anything worth mentioning since. If we're not competitive at schools level, we won't be at minor. This has a domino affect onto U20 & Senior. It'd be really interesting to see how many players we had competing at Sigerson level over that period. This has improved as SETU has improved, but I still reckon we've about 5 per year in that competition. Cork would have 40+ at that level every year, most of whom we won't hear of. I'd love to compare us to the Longfords, Offaly's & Louths, I'm willing to bet they have significantly more players competing at this level every year than we do. We need to create a school whose ambition every year is to compete for the Hogan Cup. Longford have St. Mel's, Wexford have St. Peters, Meath have St. Pats etc. I understand a lot of the coaching resources have been diverted into the schools from the Colts setup. If the aim of this is to create such a school, then this would demonstrate some forward thinking. I have my doubts though, & would love to see what the aims & objectives of such a move have been stated as"
Schools are a mess, knockbeg are laois with a few carlow lads, they have slipped too, nowhere near naas, the cbs has very little going on, very little preparation goes into their teams, I'd be very careful about throwing resources at schools unless you had full access to the school squads, what would be the point of say firing money at the cbs and half the team from graige or kileshin, now if the objective was to get the best carlow players from a few schools and enter the A then that might be something worth looking at but it has to be carlow players, there is no point doing it to benefit other counties. Strong schools are a by product of strong clubs not the other way around, and for me it has to start with improving our club footballers, I'd watch a fair bit of underage football and for me anyway the basic skills just aren't there, that comes down to coaching If you look at how coach Education is set up, foundation cover very little on the basic skills of the game award 1 needs loads of improvement too you would like to see more done around how to coach the basic skills of the game kicking/catching, instead we are looking at the athletic aspects of the game a bit too much, very important but I think skills should always take precedent, how often do you see a club player kick the ball with the outside of the boot or deliver a long ball into the forwards, at local level in Carlow this is a rarity and we are inclined to coach it out of lads. Personally I'd like to see our 12s and 14s leagues put an emphasis on kicking 2 handpasses and the ball must be kicked, support the coaches too by running a few kicking workshops, as you move up the grades you should have players who have all the skills of the games which greatly enhances what you can do

Can Gaelic Football (Handball?) Be Saved? - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Aibrean:  "The mess into which football has 'developed' is highlighted by the recent report by the Standing Committee on Playing Rules - see link below. The main points are: • 421 handpasses v 130 kickpasses per game. • Approx. 82% of kickpasses are uncontested. • Approx 35% of footpasses go backwards. • Only 41% of forward kickpasses travel more than 15m. • 23 passes (kickpasses + handpasses) to the goalkeeper in 2023 championship. • Only 6.6 high catches per game of which 60% were uncontested. • Number of attacking marks/game is 2.7 • 64% of kickouts are uncontested. • In 78% of cases there was no press on the kickout. So, the current game is what we called long ago 'a kick around' (no marking) except that it is not even a kick around, it's 'a handpass around'. These are the facts. Next question is - the difficult part - what do we do about it? https://www.gaa.ie/football/news/statistical-analysis-report-reveals-the-essence-of-modern-gaelic-football/"
You have to identify the why first more so than how. Why has the game changed so much in recent years. How much of it is down to natural evolution and how much to other factors. Fitness levels are a big thing here, paid managers, coaches etc. Influence from other sports. Basketball soccer rugby aussie rules, all these games have some degree of influence in our game much of the language we use around the game is imported from other sports. Can we all agree on the game we want to see? Maybe not. There is a lot in the modern game that is very enjoyable, watching teams breaking down a well set defence is enjoyable, variability on kickouts are, how well coached our players are and how adaptable they are to new systems. Skill levels are really good now in terms of playing off both sides etc. What do we want to see more of, faster game? More contests for the ball, more footpassing, more high fielding, less ball through the hand. How do we get there? 1. Less players on the field 2. Restrictions on handpassing 3.limits on numbers of players who can defend 4.various rules on the direction the ball must travel 5. Add new ways to score 6. Time Restrictions on possession Which of these changes the mindset of coaches to play a more traditional game? Firstly I don't think we should encourage bad play. So why would I want to create a contest for the ball when I have a safer better option, so imo whatever we do should not make players do stupid stuff with the ball,eg hoofing a ball into a 2v1 when there is a better option, so I think it's best to instead attack the side of the game that is most boring, maybe we look at rewarding turnovers in your own half so if you are messing about with the ball (like roscommon) in your own half and get turned over that score is worth 2 or maybe 3 points, I've seen Philip kerr suggest this it's interesting. As a coach I would want to be moving the ball quickly out of there and as an opposition coach I'm going to press more. In my own head I wonder about a 13 man game will that create the space we want to play the ball or will it lead to more defensive game. Rules on players staying in their own half sound good but could be abused without the right punishment to go with breaches. I've seen a lot of boring football this year at adult level I've also seen some very entertaining juvenile games having coached a minor team and a county development squad.
