Ferns St Aidan’s landed the first Wexford SHC title in their history this afternoon by defeating St Martin’s on a 1-20 to 0-22 score-line at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

Nine years on from their last appearance in a county senior hurling championship final, it was Patrick Breen’s splendid solo goal that helped swing the contest for Ferns before Jonny Dwyer had the last day in a thrilling final with a remarkable sideline cut that captured their maiden title.

Breen’s strike came right on the half-hour mark and sent Pat Bennett's men in at the break leading by the minimum (1-9 to 0-11).

The second-half was very much tit-for-tat and the sides would be level heading for injury-time until Chris O’Connor sailed over to make it 1-19 to 0-21 in favour of the men in red and white.

In what was their sixth ever final appearance - the last came in the 2013 loss to Outlart-The-Ballagh - Ferns were able to maintain that one-point margin as Dwyer sent over a sensational sideline-cut five minutes into injury-time and when the final whistle sounded it sparked amazing celebrations for the first time winners at Wexford Park.
