Austin Stacks have a Munster club SFC final to look forward to in the New Year after cruising past Newcastle West this afternoon, 1-15 to 0-7.

A first provincial victory for the Bishop Moynihan Cup winners since 2014, they led from start to finish on home turf to secure their place in the decider against St Finbarr's (Cork) on January 15/16.

Minus the services of regulars Ronan Shanahan and Shane O'Callaghan, Wayne Quillinan's side still proved too strong for their Limerick counterparts at Austin Stack Park.

By half-time the game was well out of Newcastle's reach as they trailed 0-9 to 0-1, with excellent free-taker Darragh O'Brien leading the charge for the dominant hosts and Eoin Hurley eventually getting the visitors up and running on the scoreboard from a placed ball in the 23rd minute.

Newcastle had their best spell after the break when four successive points from Hurley, Mike McMahon, Diarmaid Kelly and Iain Corbett trimmed the deficit to six points, 0-11 to 0-5.

But a brilliantly worked Stacks goal on 41 minutes by Brendan O’Sullivan (1-2) put them back in the ascendancy.
