Éire Óg find extra gear to down Loughmore-Castleiney

Cusack Park, Ennis

Two goals in the first-half of extra time were crucial in securing Éire Óg a 2-11 to 0-12 victory over Loughmore-Castleiney in this afternoon’s Munster club SFC quarter-final in Ennis.

In what was a titanic tussle at Cusack Park, Liam Treacy (2) and John McGrath kicked the last three points for Loughmore to salvage a 0-9 draw and force extra time.

The Clare champions had led by the odd point in 11 at half-time and looked to be through to the last four until their Tipperary counterparts came up with a big finish to ensure 20 more minutes.

Four minutes into extra time full-back Aaron Fitzgerald ghosted forward and drove home Éire Óg’s first goal and just two minutes later Mark McInerney had the ball in Loughmore’s net again.

There’d be no way back for the visitors from there as the Banner County’s champions now look forward to a date with St Finbarr’s of Cork in two weeks’ time for a place in the Munster final.
