Eden Heaslip (RIP) with Joe Canning.

The family of Cavan teenager Eden Heaslip who died by suicide last September received a heartwarming visit from Joe Canning - Eden's hero - this week.

Eden Heaslip of Killynanum, Carrickaboy, was just 18-years-old when his body was found on Monday, September 20, 2021.

On Tuesday night's RTÉ Prime Time programme, the Heaslip family revealed the heartbreaking story of how Eden took his own after he had been subjected to “every form of bullying”.

Eden idolised Galway hurling star Canning and the Heaslip family told viewers how a photograph taken with the Portumna man at the National Ploughing Championships was one of his prized possessions.

Canning, who is now retired from inter-county hurling, drove down from Limerick to meet Eden's parents, Maggie and Raymond, and his siblings, Chloe and Finn, in their home.

"A true hero and a true gentleman called for a cuppa and a chat yesterday evening," Eden's dad Ray posted on social media.

"It meant so much for us to talk to Joe Canning as he was Eden's hero on and off the hurling field.

"I understand why he is such a role model to young people. Thanks again for your support Joe, hope you got back to Limerick safely."
