Football Update

The Senior Ladies Division 3 final between Cornafean and Kingscourt took place in sunny Lavey on Sunday afternoon last.

After an absorbing hours football where the Reds were on top in most sectors and  led for long periods of the game they were heartbreakingly beaten on the stroke of full time by a free awarded to the Kingscourt girls.  It was a bitter pill to swallow for this group of girls and their management team after a great year and their performance on the day. Well done to the Ladies and their management team and no doubt when they regroup there  will be better days ahead.

Final score Cornafean 3-12   Kingscourt 3-13

The Reserve men after a great performance against Belturbet in the park on Saturday evening unfortunately exited the Division 2 championship after late scores from the town side gave them a late late victory.  The lads also deserved a victory from this match but were caught with some late clinical finishing.  The team are due to play one more game in the competition.

Final score Reds 3-13 Belturbet 2-18

Ladies Division 3 Final

Cornafean 3-12   Kingscourt 3-13

The early minutes of the game were uneventful as both teams grew into the match.  By the first water break the Reds led by 4 points to Kingscourt 2 points compliments of a brace each from Amy Wharton and Orla Smith and the Reds would have been the happier team at this stage.  Post water break a great goal from Ashling Smith and almost immediately an Amy Wharton penalty and point had Cornafean in a commanding position.  With Cornafean on top Fiona Morrow and Amy again landed scores but near the break the girls in blue signalled their intent with 1-2 to leave the half time score 2-6 to 1-5 in favour of the Reds.

Cornafean had a dream start to the second half when a speculative shot from Amy Wharton dropped into the net but the ladies in blue who were always dangerous on the break responded with 3 pts of their own to stay very much in the game.  Back came the Reds with 4 pts on the spin from O. Smith, R. Smith, S. Cullivan and A. McIntyre going into the water break 7 pts to the good and surely sensing victory  On the resumption the awarding of two penalties to Kingscourt which were duly dispatched had the game back in the melting pot.  The Reds were now finding it difficult to retain possession  and Kingscourt seemed to be sensing victory.  Amy kept the Red end of the scoreboard ticking over but late points from frees put  Kingscourt in front at the death. There is no doubt the awarding of Two penalties and four close in frees in the latter stages of the game left  Cornafean players and supporters scratching their heads.  A late late D. McCaffrey shot was brilliantly saved and so it was the east Cavan side who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.  Hard luck to the  girls and management team, they had a great year and hopefully the group will come back stronger after this very disappointing final defeat.

Division 2

Cornafean 3-13   Belturbet 2-18

Cornafean and Belturbet Reserve teams served up a very entertaining hours championship football in Pairc Naomh Fionnan on Saturdah evening last.  This game had everything, fast flowing footbal, great scores, missed chances, great saves including a penalty and a result which was in doubt right up to the long whistle.  After the first 8 minutes of the game when Cornafean went in front, they led their opponents until the last 5 minutes but Belturbet's fire power in the full forward line snatched the game from the Reds at the death.  Two goals courtesy of J. Traynor and J. Martin midway through the first half put Cornafean in the driving seat and this complimented by great points after the water break from J. Traynor, D. Kilkenny 2 and J. McGahern left the Reds leading 2-9 to 1-7 at half time.  The Belturbet lads signalled their interest after the break with three unanswered points.  S. Doyle replied for Cornafean and moments later when the visitors were awarded a penalty S. Cullivan in the goals pulled off a great save to the relief of the team in Red.  With the clock ticking down Cornafean produced a fine flowing move up the field and a fine pass from D. Kilmenny found J. Traynor who buried the ball to the net.  The Reds were now 4 pts up but almost immediately Belturbet took advantage of some hesitancy from the Reds around the middle of the part and clinically dispatched the ball to the net to make it Cornafean 3-11 to Belturbet 2-13 in the dying moments of the match.  It was the men in maroon who now had their tails up pushing on to score five late points for the Reds.  Well done to the Belturbet lads who edged out a thoroughly entertaining match and unfortunately the Reds after an almighty effort exit the Division  2 Reserve Championship.  Thank you and well done to the management and players for the efforts all year.
