Hugely-important hurling action took place today as the climax of the national hurling league coincided with the start of the Leinster SHC.

Holders Waterford put their Division One crown on the line against in-form Munster rivals Clare in a fascinating league decider in Thurles at 3:30.

Clare had won all eleven competitive games they'd played so far in 2016 but they wouldn't get things easy against a Na Deise team that was bidding to put league crowns back to back for the first time. A real cracker unfolded!

Before that, there were two round-robin fixtures in the Leinster senior hurling championship: competion newcomers Kerry hosted Carlow at Tralee and Westmeath entertained Offaly in a crunch midlands derby at Mullingar.
