Beating Meath in the manner they did, was one of the main highlights for former Westmeath manager Tom Cribbin during his term in charge of the Lake County.

Speaking to the media after he had announced his decision to step down after three years in charge, Cribbin was asked what were his highlights during his time.

Instantly, he replied that gaining that first ever championship win over Meath was something that he had on his list of priorities from when he took over the job.

Westmeath looked dead and buried at half time in the Leinster SFC clash against the Royals in June 2015, but a Lazarus-like comeback in the second period saw them snatch an historic victory.

"It had to be the second half of the Meath game," the Westmeath Independent reports Cribbin as stating. "Gerry Buckley (sports journalist) has been my friend for donkey's years and all I ever heard out of Gerry anytime I met him was - 'I'll die happy if we beat Meath'.

"And from day one of that year, I told the boys, 'We're going to beat Meath'. At training every night, I said it and repeated it."
