Still going strong

May 26, 2017

Graham Geraghty celebrates a score for Meath in 1996.

A quick glance through our match reports from the opening round of the club football championship has revealed a healthy number of former inter county stars that are still going strong.

Daithi Regan - Introduced as a sub and hit three points in St Michaels 2-14 to 1-4 win over Clann Na nGael in the Junior C.

Ollie Murphy - The Carnaross All Star has never lost it. Kicked four points for the clubs second string as they recorded a win over neighbours Ballinlough.

David Gallagher - Bossed the midfield exchanges for long periods against neighbours Dunshaughlin in Pairc Tailteann.

Caoimhin King - Still plenty to offer in the full back line for Dunshaughlin as was evident against Dunboyne.

Donal Curtis - Again the go to man in the Rathkenny attack. Scored two points in that narrow loss to Donaghmore Ashbourne.

Brian Meade - One of the best midfielders on the club circuit. Hit two brilliant points against The Moors at Pairc Tailteann.

Cian Ward - The Wolfe Tones marksman has still the potential to hit high scores. Five points against Gaeil Colmcille in that last minute defeat at Athboy.

Eoghan Harrington - As usual still giving it his all. Started a full back for the Tones against Gaeil Colmcille.

Gary O'Brien - Wore his usual number 7 jersey against Blackhall Gaels but was forced off the field with an injury after 18 minutes.

Cormac McGuinness - A goal from the midfielder for O'Mahonys in that opening round win at Dunshaughlin.

Stephen Bray - An unusual quiet afternoon for the O'Mahonys forward. A point against Blackhall but still has plenty of potential to trouble the best defenders.

Shane O'Rourke - What would Andy McEntee give to have this man fit for inter county fare? The best club midfielder in the county by a mile. Two points against St. Colmcilles.

Peadar Byrne - Still the best player in Ballinlough. Hit eight points including a few long range monster frees in that smash and grab win over a stunned St Michaels.

Paddy Gilsenan - Possesses plenty of pace and scoring power. Hit three points in Oldcastle's win over Syddan in Carnaross.

Gerard Robinson - Top scorer for Dunboyne's second string with a goal and three in their win over Wolfe Tones.

Niall McLoughlin - Started as a half back in that loss to Gaeil Colmcille. Plenty to offer the Wolfe Tones cause.

Chris O'Connor - One of the main Ballinabrackey players as Bective were defeated. A selector with Colm Coyle's minor football team this year also.

Damien Carroll - Turned in a Man of the Match performance in that opening round win over Bective.

Graham Geraghty - Lined out at corner forward and ended up 'sweeper'  for Clann Na nGael and showed glimpses of why the former great is the holder of every honour the game has to offer.

James Macken - Still looking after the edge of the small square with effect for Rathkenny.

Barry Lynch - Wore his usual number 8 jersey for Kilmainham against Curraha.

Alan Nestor - Returned from a spell in Kerry and kicked two points for Blackhall Gaels in that three point loss to Navan O'Mahonys.

Cormac McGill - Still at the top of his game in the full back line as demonstrated in that win over Rathkenny at Navan.

Terry Skelly - Drumconrath's best player despite that loss to neighours Meath Hill at headquarters.

Jamie Queeney - Scorer of three points as Na Fianna went under to Ratoath at Dunsany.
