U21 club championship finals best XV

December 06, 2016

The celebrations begin for Donaghmore Ashbourne in Dunshaughlin.

The Meath Under 21 season came to a close last Saturday night under lights as Oldcastle claimed the B championship title.

Donaghmore Ashbourne kept a firm grip on the McKeown Cup at Dunshaughlin while Wolfe Tones made up for the previous two years of disappointment when claiming the 'A' crown at Pairc Tailteann.

We pick our best XV from the 3 finals.

1 Ronan Taggart Oldcastle: The only keeper in the three finals that did not concede a goal. Solid and dependable and a good voice at the back for his defence.

2 Jack McCarney Donaghmore Ashbourne: An impressive display from the defender. Tight marking and always aiming to be first to the O'Neills. Won plenty of 50/50 ball to break Skryne hearts at Dunshaughlin.

3 Daniel O'Neill Wolfe Tones: A future county senior full back in the making. Very strong and commanding around the square in that goal fest at Pairc Tailteann.

4 Matthew Taggart Oldcastle: Plenty of Drumconrath Meath Hill attacks broke down around the defender. Very comfortable in possession and alway willing to push forward.

5 Brughach O'Fionnagain Wolfe Tones: Assigned to mark Killary dangerman Daire Rowe and carried out his duties to great effect. Proved a great link man between defence and attack.

6 Thomas McGovern Donaghmore Ashbourne: The joint captain was outstanding as the 'Moores' successfully defended the Joey McKeown Cup. Brilliant around the middle sector and kicked three fabulous points.

7 Adrian Sheridan Wolfe Tones: A commanding display from the Tones half back. Cleaned up in any 50/50 battles and was very clever in the use of possession.

8 John Wilson Donaghmore Ashbourne: A commanding display of high fielding and ball distribution from the young 'Moores' midfielder as Skryne were put to the sword at Dunshaughlin.

9 Kevin Traynor Killary Emmets: Massive work rate and drive from the county under 21. Was a the heart of most of the good football played by the combination side at headquarters.

10 Jason Fox Skryne: Proved a real threat to Donaghmore Ashbourne. Great work rate and link play and chipped in with 1-4 from placed balls. Showed great maturity with his goal from the penalty spot.

11 Michael Deegan Donaghmore Ashbourne: A man of the match display from the talented attacker. Kicked eight points and was back in defence on numerous occasions to help the cause.

12 Thomas Blaney Wolfe Tones: A real tour de force from the Tones attacker. Scored an amazing 4-6 from play as Wolfe Tones finally got their hands on silverware at the 3rd time of asking.

13 Ronan Maguire Oldcastle: His two goals and a point along with his general play were crucial as Oldcastle claimed the B title under lights at Carlanstown.

14 Thomas O'Reilly Wolfe Tones: Still a couple of years to go at this level. Hit 2-2 and was involved with a lot of his team's scores in that nine goal thriller at Pairc Tailteann.

15 Ian Malone Drumconrath Meath Hill: At one stage in the second half it looked like the corner forward was going to win it on his own. Scored seven points and gave the Oldcastle rearguard plenty of food for thought.
