Moran adopts honest approach

Retired Limerick hurler Niall Moran admitted that he did not want to be a 'passenger' on the squad.

Moran felt that his contribution to the side in the early season was not what he wanted to be and instead of just languishing on the panel, he decided to be upfront with the management team and walk away from the squad.

The 31-year-old made 46 championship appearances for Limerick and was coaxed back into the squad last year by TJ Reid after he had retired in December 2013.

However, on his return to the panel this year, Moran felt that he wasn't near the level he should and the Ahane clubman told the Limerick Leader that he decided to be honest with everybody.

"I spoke to TJ earlier in the year and I said I'd play some of the early season games and see how I felt physically - having played the last four games I felt myself that I wasn't getting to the pitch of where I needed to be at this level and time constraints outside of hurling weren't going to give me the leverage to put in even more time," said Moran.

"I felt it best to be honest now and not become a passenger in a setup loaded with ambition and talent. The margins for victory don't allow that.

"I could not speak highly enough of the management, backroom staff and players. It goes without saying that I am disappointed in myself that I wasn't getting to where I wanted to be, but I am 100% behind TJ and the best group of players that I could hope to be part of."
