Gardai launch probe into U16 hurling match violence

Gardai have launched an investigation.
Gardai in Cork are investigating a brawl that broke out during an U16 hurling championship match last weekend which left three people needing medical assistance and another hospitalised.

The fracas, which is also being investigated by Cork county board disciplinary chiefs, occurred midway through the second half of the U16 Rebel Og East hurling championship clash between Valley Rovers and St. Vincent's at Ballinora on Sunday evening. St. Vincent's had scored two quick points to draw level before an adult 'supporter' ran onto the pitch and angrily confronted both the referee and a number of players.

According to reports, this led to "an appalling free-for-all" involving both adults and players, that left the referee with no option but to abandon the game.

The Garda probe was launched after a person who was injured in the fracas made a formal complaint.
