Brady strikes again

June 30, 2008
Cavan's Paul Brady added another title to his already impressive 2008 haul, when he collected the Irish One-Wall Nationals title in Sligo yesterday (Sunday). Brady defeated Mayo kingpin, Dessie Keegan in two straight games 15-8, 15-8 to secure his first ever One-Wall title. "I'm delighted to have taken my first One-Wall title; it's a great game and I really enjoyed that final," said Brady. "There was no nerves, it was just sheer enjoyment." The Breffni man was competing in the competition for the first time in it's 12 year history, and having taken the US Nationals title in Kansas two weeks ago, his addition added plenty of excitement to the weekend's action. In the semi-final, the 28-year-old had a 21-18 victory over Keegan's Ballaghaderreen clubmate, Vinny Moran to seal his final place. Keegan easily overcame Roscommon's Chris Doolin in his semi-final meeting. The final failed to live up to expectations as Brady blazed to an 11-0 lead in the first, before Keegan eventually settled into the game and edged back to 11-8 before the Cavan man took the opening game. In the second, Brady was in awesome form and while Keegan had opportunities, the sheer athleticism of the current 40x20 world number one proved unstoppable. In the Ladies Open, Roscommon's Marianna Rushe defeated England's Katie White in two straight games to make amends for last year's final defeat. Ten of England's top One-Wall players travelled to Sligo for the event and while no silverware crossed the Irish Sea, their participation added great excitement to the event.
